Big blue evolution: Moanalua defends OIA boys volleyball title

By Paul Honda on April 28, 2022

A 36-inch vertical and precise accuracy don’t always go together for outside hitters. Keanu Kaawa is that rare one. The 6-foot-4 senior had 22 kills and four aces as unbeaten Moanalua roared past OIA West powerhouse Mililani 25-17, 25-13, 25-22 for the Division I boys volleyball league crown on Wednesday night. It is the eighth OIA crown under coach Alan Cabanting. Kaawa’s explosive vertical and elite body control, plus an ability to deceive defenders, was on full display at Radford’s […]

Mililani launches to No. 1 in Softball Top 10

By Paul Honda on April 27, 2022

The women of Troy are wreaking havoc on their way to the top. Mililani (15-4 overall) collected seven of 10 first-place votes to bump ‘Iolani out of the No. 1 ranking in the Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 on Monday. The Lady Trojans are on a rampage with nine wins in a row since losing their OIA West opener to Kapolei. They edged Campbell, 3-1, and routed Leilehua, 11-1, last week. Maryknoll (16-3) moved up a notch to No. 2 after […]

Saint Louis regains sole possession of No. 1 in Baseball Top 10

By Paul Honda on April 27, 2022

The tricky winds of fickle voters prevail this week. Despite losing to then-unranked ‘Iolani, Saint Louis has re-emerged as the sole occupant of the No. 1 ranking in the Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10. A week ago, Baldwin and Saint Louis shared the top billing. Baldwin then blanked Kamehameha-Maui, 3-0, and edged rival Maui, 2-1. The Bears, 16-2 overall and a perfect 12-0 against Maui Interscholastic League opponents, collected four of 12 first-place votes from the panel of coaches and media. […]

By Paul Honda on April 20, 2022

When he’s not busy grinding away on his homework — and a 3.5 grade-point average — Liona Lefau is at track practice. Lefau runs the 100-meter dash and 4×100 relay. “I don’t even know what my fastest time is,” said Lefau, who last ran track two years ago, pre-pandemic, as a freshman. He is also making time for his brothers in Rebel Squad, the national championship team in Pylon that stepped into prominence in 2021. That same squad took the […]

By Paul Honda on April 20, 2022

The good-news Bears are back. Baldwin collected four of nine first-place votes and landed in a tie at No. 1 with Saint Louis in the Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10. The Bears swept Maui in a three-game series last week and improved to 12-0 in the MIL (14-2 overall). Baldwin could not shake the Crusaders, who also collected four first-place votes from coaches and media. Saint Louis (20-2-1 overall) lost to Punahou last week in the ILH double-elimination tournament. Baldwin won […]

‘Iolani remains near-unanimous No. 1 in Softball Top 10

By Paul Honda on April 20, 2022

A week without game action did the ‘Iolani Raiders some good. It certainly didn’t change their place in the Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10. ‘Iolani collected eight of nine first-place votes to remain at No. 1 for the fifth week in a row. The Raiders have already sealed a state-tournament berth by winning the ILH regular season. Mililani has won seven games in a row and moved up to No. 2. Maryknoll, which beat Kamehameha twice last week and sealed second […]
