By Paul Honda on May 10, 2022

Thirty-eight, 11 and nine. That is 38 boys volleyball state championships for Punahou. Eleven under coach Rick Tune, including nine in a row after a Buffanblu sweep of Moanalua on Saturday night at Blaisdell. The seniors, including setter Keegan Au Yuen, Keau Thompson, Riley Haine and Aidan Tune, clutched the koa championship trophy. Three years since the previous state tournament. It was quite the wait. “It’s our senior year so it’s a real special moment to share with all these […]

No. 1 Punahou is vulnerable? One coach says yes

By Paul Honda on May 7, 2022

After 37 state championships in boys volleyball, there still is no compromise for Punahou. A 25-17, 25-15, 25-17 sweep over OIA runner-up Mililani was convincing enough. Can anyone stop the top-seeded Buffanblu? Mililani’s serve was tough on the ILH champions, enough for a string of three aces early in the match and some occasional success against a normally teflon-tough Punahou serve-receive crew. Punahou coach Rick Tune was seated for nearly the entire match, gauging the waters. His grade of the […]

DAY ONE: Stunners at Iron Maehara Stadium

By Paul Honda on May 5, 2022

Star-Advertiser scribe Billy Hull was up at 4:30 a.m. on a fine Wednesday morning. Boarded a plane, headed to Maui and made it to Iron Maehara Stadium 10 minutes before the opening first-round battle at the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball Division I State Championships. What the longtime writer then witnessed for the next 12 hours was, perhaps, the most unpredictable and mind-blowing quarterfinal round in baseball state-tourney history. Here’s a quick look at the Bonecrusher’s reviews of Wednesday’s thrillers. Thursday’s […]

By Paul Honda on May 3, 2022

The Baldwin Bears are back at No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10. The Bears edged Saint Louis by one point in the voting by coaches and media to reclaim the top spot. They shared the No. 1 ranking with Saint Louis two weeks ago, but the Crusaders regained the top position last week. Baldwin (16-2 overall) had a bye through the weekend and collected five out of 11 first-place votes. Saint Louis (22-3-1) also has five first-place votes […]

By Paul Honda on May 3, 2022

The shuffle continues with ‘Iolani and Kapolei sharing the No. 1 ranking in the Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10. It is the first trip to the peak of the poll for Kapolei (14-4-1 overall), which may be the hottest team in the state behind ace pitcher Jerzie Liana. ‘Iolani returned to the top spot with five first-place votes from the panel of coaches and media. The Raiders were No. 3 last week, then rolled to the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title […]

Run is not done: Rebel Squad of Kahuku defends Mecca, Level Up titles

By Paul Honda on May 3, 2022

This is the bridge that crossed over any remaining barriers for Kahuku football. The bridge remains open. Rebel Squad captured three more Pylon football titles this spring, including Mecca 2, extending a massive win streak dating back to the spring of 2021. The team defended its Hawaii National Guard tournament title, flew up to Utah to defend its Level Up crown, then arrived at Mecca 2 (Mesquite, Ariz.) prepared to another defense. Rebel Squad arrived with a full roster, including […]

5 slices and a 2-hit shutout for Taryn Irimata in Campbell’s 5-0 win over Kaiser

By Paul Honda on April 29, 2022

Sometimes, making the best of circumstances is all that matters. When the Campbell Sabers left class early and boarded the bus from Ewa Beach to Hawaii Kai, there was no time to have lunch. They had sandwiches en route to Kaiser High School, a 32-mile journey on a busy Thursday afternoon. There was also pizza. “It was Pizza Hut. ‘Meat Lovers’ style,” ace pitcher Taryn Irimata said. The senior right-hander must’ve enjoyed her lunch. Irimata had five slices of the […]

Big blue evolution: Moanalua defends OIA boys volleyball title

By Paul Honda on April 28, 2022

A 36-inch vertical and precise accuracy don’t always go together for outside hitters. Keanu Kaawa is that rare one. The 6-foot-4 senior had 22 kills and four aces as unbeaten Moanalua roared past OIA West powerhouse Mililani 25-17, 25-13, 25-22 for the Division I boys volleyball league crown on Wednesday night. It is the eighth OIA crown under coach Alan Cabanting. Kaawa’s explosive vertical and elite body control, plus an ability to deceive defenders, was on full display at Radford’s […]
