St. Francis completes D-II title quest

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 11, 2018

St. Francis junior Kailee Mahelona was in no rush to leave Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium after the Saints’ 10-0 victory over Kamehameha-Hawaii in the Division II final of the DataHouse/HHSAA Softball Championship on Friday. She didn’t have a choice really. While Mahelona celebrated the Saints’ second state title and first since 2005, her father, David, was preparing for the Division I final as Punahou’s pitching coach. “I have to (stay),” Kailee said after the Saints’ postgame meeting. “That’s my ride […]

Maryknoll retains ILH softball crown

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 3, 2018

Maryknoll softball coach John Uekawa insisted the Spartans’ path to a second straight ILH championship wasn’t similar to the route they followed last year. “It’s not similar,” Uekawa said. “it’s exactly (the same).” Other than a change of venue for the championship game, the Spartans indeed took the long road to the title the last two seasons. They captured the program’s first league crown with a win at Kamehameha a year ago. This time, Maryknoll traveled just across Wilder Ave. […]

Maryknoll clinches state tournament berth

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 1, 2018

Gratified but not satisfied. Maryknoll clinched a state tournament berth and earned a shot at the overall ILH softball title with a resounding 15-2 win over ‘Iolani in six innings on Tuesday in the league’s tournament final and left Sand Island Park looking forward to the next step. “As a team it was a relief for us, but we still definitely need to work on a lot of stuff,” Maryknoll senior Kahilu McNicoll said. “I feel we didn’t really hit […]

Campbell, Roosevelt meet for OIA softball title

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 28, 2018

Even in the midst of a run of three consecutive state championships, the OIA title has proven elusive for the Campbell softball program. The Sabers have capped each of the last three seasons with a celebration following the state tournament final at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, but not since 2013 has Campbell entered states as the OIA champion. Roosevelt’s OIA title drought stretches back to 2009 as the league’s power structure shifted heavily out West since. The Sabers and Rough […]

Wild comeback extends Maryknoll’s season

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 26, 2018

Maryknoll had remarkably chopped a seven-run deficit to one when Kiana Arcayena stepped into the batter’s box with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Thursday at Sand Island. But Arcayena still needed to reach base to extend the Spartans’ season, and by extension, her career. With Logan Carlos representing the tying run 60 feet away and Maryknoll trailing Kamehameha 11-10 in an ILH softball tournament semifinal, Arcayena took two balls then watched […]

Pearl City locks up return to state tournament

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 19, 2018

Sam Prentice called it “redemption.” Just over a year ago, a loss to Moanalua in the consolation semifinals ended the Chargers’ season in the OIA playoffs. On Thursday, Prentice and fellow Pearl City senior Cade Halemanu helped power the Chargers to a 4-1 home win over Na Menehune to advance to the OIA semifinals and secure a return to the Division I baseball state tournament. Halemanu held Moanalua to three singles and struck out 10 in a complete-game victory. He […]
