Sulu returns to help power Damien

The last time Aperamo Sulu appeared on a football field, he was being driven out of Vidinha Stadium. The Damien freshman running back suffered a leg injury on the Monarchs’ first play from scrimmage in a state tournament win over Kauai last November and left the stadium in an ambulance. Mililani honors fallen freshman

Opening night at Mililani began with a somber farewell. Before taking the field for a nonleague game with Kailua, the Trojans observed a moment of silence in honor of freshman Kekiai Hett, a junior varsity defensive lineman who died suddenly on Friday. Hett’s No. 99 jersey hung on the back of the Mililani bench alongside a sign bearing his name while his junior varsity teammates posted a 50-18 win. Waipahu entered Friday’s season opener against Waianae with the numbers — in the record book and on the rosters — tilting heavily toward the visiting Seariders. At the end of the night, the figures that mattered most favored the Marauders, and decidedly so. Punahou and Kaimuki won’t meet again this season, but Saturday’s scrimmage might have been just the first in a series of matchups between Buffanblu senior Duke Clemens and the Bulldogs’ Sama Paama.
