Kapolei rides defense into playoffs

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 3, 2015

Kapolei enters the OIA Division I playoffs with a four-game winning streak powered in no small part by the Hurricanes defense. The Hurricanes (5-3, 4-3 OIA Blue) held their final three opponents of the regular season to a touchdown or less while allowing a total of 19 points in wins over Campbell, Farrington and Aiea. Kapolei held Aiea to two field goals and 135 yards in total offense in a 16-6 win on homecoming night on Friday. The defensive performance […]

Radford turns its attention to Nanakuli

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 27, 2015

Radford won’t have to guard against looking ahead this week. After completing a 44-7 win over Kalaheo on Saturday, the Rams could turn their attention to a showdown with Nanakuli on Friday in a matchup of the two remaining undefeated teams in OIA Division II play. “It’s a big game next week,” Radford coach Fred Salanoa said moments after the Rams improved to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the division. “We’re going to enjoy this win and we’ll get to […]

Young sets Kamehameha passing mark

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 26, 2015

Both of Kamehameha’s true home games this season were highlighted by record-breaking passing performances. Back on Aug. 15, Thomas Yam broke a 13-year-old school record with 323 yards in a win over Baldwin in the Warriors’ first game at Kunuiakea Field. That mark lasted 41 days before being surpassed by Justice Young’s 374 yards in Friday’s 63-21 win over ‘Iolani on homecoming/senior night on the Kapalama campus. Young, the third quarterback to start for the Warriors this season, completed 23 […]

Radford builds on road win

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 19, 2015

Radford coach Fred Salanoa credited the Rams’ trip to Washington last week for reinforcing the bond forged in the preseason. They returned to league play with a complete team performance in a 54-14 win at Pearl City on Friday night. A week after setting the program’s scoring record in a 74-6 win over Mount Tahoma in Washington, all three phases contributed to Friday’s victory as the Rams pulled away from the Chargers to remain undefeated and tied with Nanakuli atop […]

Kahuku storms back from first deficit

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 13, 2015

Facing a deficit for the first time this season, Kahuku responded with a six-touchdown flurry in less than a quarter in Saturday’s 42-6 win over Castle. The fourth-ranked Red Raiders had surrendered just one touchdown through their first four games and had gone nearly a month since an opposing player reached the end zone entering Saturday’s OIA Red game. After having the game postponed on Friday due to lightning over the North Shore, Kahuku got off to a relatively slow […]

Waianae scored 90 without running up score

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 6, 2015

A perfect storm produced an outcome that figures to resonate beyond Saturday’s round up of high school football scores. Facing an overmatched McKinley team, Waianae stayed on the ground to generate 453 yards in a record-breaking 90-0 win at Roosevelt’s Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. The Seariders stayed relatively basic in the running game, didn’t attempt a pass and played their entire roster by the end of the second quarter in the OIA Red game. Ten Waianae players had carries in the […]

Simanu ties Waipahu record

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 5, 2015

Waipahu receiver Andrew Simanu matched a 20-year old school record with a 249-yard performance in Waipahu’s 60-34 loss to Kaiser on Friday night. Four of Simanu’s 12 receptions went for at least 35 yards and he caught touchdown passes of 50 and 13 yards while pushing his season totals to 542 yards and four touchdowns in four OIA Red games. Simanu’s night tied Neal Gossett’s 249-yard game against Waiakea set on Aug. 25, 1995. He caught touchdown passes from backup […]

Tom’s triple-threat performance powers Kaiser

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 5, 2015

Nicolas Tom appeared a bit winded after crossing the goal line for the final touchdown of Kaiser’s 60-34 win at Waipahu on Friday night. Hard to blame the Cougars’ triple-threat for being a little leg weary after scoring in all three phases to help power Kaiser (1-3, 1-2 OIA Red) to its first win of the season in a game that ended 10 minutes before midnight. Tom started at quarterback and cornerback and returned kicks for the Cougars. He completed […]
