Red Raiders stayed true to their DNA

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 21, 2015

Five Kahuku players took a turn at quarterback on Friday and the Red Raiders tossed in a couple of key wrinkles. But the front line remained the engine for the Red Raider offense in a drive to the Division I state championship. During the regular season, the Red Raiders committed to tucking in behind the offensive line and pounding out first downs — a mind-set first-year head coach Vavae Tata referred to on multiple occasions as staying true to the program’s […]

Choys enjoy state tournament ride

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 30, 2015

It’s probably been a hectic couple of weeks around the Choy household. In his first season coaching the Farrington girls volleyball team, Barney Choy led the Governors to the OIA Division II title while his daughter, ‘Iolani senior Bailey Choy, helped the Raiders capture their first ILH championship since 2001 last week. The Division I and II state tournament schedules separated them this week, but they’ll finish the season in the same arena on Saturday. Farrington will play in the […]

Le Jardin advances with upset of Konawaena

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 30, 2015

Built on the site of the former Kailua Drive-In, Le Jardin Academy provided a stunning plot twist in the Division II state girls volleyball tournament on Thursday. In the program’s first state tournament appearance, the Bulldogs — who began the season with just seven players on the varsity roster — earned a spot among the final four teams still in pursuit of the Division II title with an upset of top-seeded Konawaena. Le Jardin, the ILH runner up, advanced to face […]

Malepeai powers Trojans into OIA semis

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 18, 2015

Vavae Malepeai and the rest of the Mililani offense did their part to help freshman Dillon Gabriel get comfortable in his first varsity start on Saturday. Mililani coach Rod York gave Gabriel the starting assignment for the Trojans’ OIA Division I quarterfinal game against Moanalua, and it helps when he can turn around and hand the ball off to one of the state’s most prolific backs. Malepeai gave Gabriel a lead to work with by breaking loose on a 70-yard […]

Sevelino delivered for Nanakuli

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 17, 2015

If not for Andrew Neves’ electrifying kickoff return that gave Kaimuki a 27-22 win over Nanakuli Friday night, the buzz following the OIA Division II semifinal would have likely centered on Golden Hawks backup quarterback Brandon Sevelino and coach Keala Watson’s daring. Sevelino, a senior listed on the roster as a wide receiver, had attempted just one pass this season when he took over behind center in place of starter Nainoa Banks, who was shaken up at the end of […]

Neves’ return extends Kaimuki’s season

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 17, 2015

Andrew Neves wrote himself into Kaimuki lore with his sideline sprint to the game-winning score in the Bulldogs’ jaw-dropping 27-22 playoff win over Nanakuli on Friday night. With the Bulldogs less than 14 seconds away from turning in their pads, Neves said a prayer before fielding a kickoff and extended Kaimuki’s remarkable turnaround season with his lightning-strike return as time expired. “What I told myself was do it for my boys, do it for my coaches,” Neves said as the […]

Moanalua thrives on the edge

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 10, 2015

Moanalua coach Jason Cauley figured Leilehua’s defensive front might make it tough for the Na Menehune ground game between the tackles. So he devised other ways to give Michael Feliciano room to roam. Held to 27 rushing yards on 13 carries, Feliciano was quarterback Alakai Yuen’s top target in Moanalua’s 58-22 win at Leilehua on Friday in the first round of the OIA Division I playoffs. Feliciano caught 11 passes for 131 and two touchdowns in Moanalua’s first win over […]

Governors earn a week off

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 4, 2015

Challen Faamatau’s ability to carry a heavy workload helped Farrington earn some time off. Faamatau ran for 114 yards on 24 carries and scored all three of the Governors’ touchdowns in their 21-14 win over Campbell on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. With the win, Farrington secured second place in the OIA Blue and a bye in the first round of the OIA Division I playoffs. The Governors will face the winner of the first-round matchup between Campbell and Kaiser in […]
