State softball: OIA West sweeps first round

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 11, 2016

The opening day of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I Softball Championship served as testament to the strength and depth of the OIA West. Of the division’s seven teams, five will be among the eight playing in the state tournament’s quarterfinal round on Wednesday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The OIA West went 4-0 in the first round on Tuesday with Leilehua, Campbell, Mililani and Pearl City advancing. Kapolei, the tournament’s top seed and OIA champion, had a bye in the first […]

Agbayani goes the distance for ‘Iolani

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 4, 2016

‘Iolani softball coach Dean Yonamine second-guessed himself after pulling Aleia Agbayani early in a loss to Pac-Five last week. So he had no doubts about leaving the freshman in the circle late in Wednesday’s ILH playoff game against Punahou. The 10-5 loss to Pac-Five to close the regular season left the Raiders second in the ILH regular season standings, forcing them to play their way into the state tournament through the league’s single-elimination playoff. After edging Mid-Pacific on Monday, ‘Iolani […]

Hurricanes find redemption in the rain

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 1, 2016

It was somewhat fitting that the final out of Saturday’s OIA Division I softball championship ended up in the glove of Kapolei left fielder Dallas Pollard-Brownell. The inning prior, a ball that popped out of her grip helped position Mililani for a third straight OIA crown. But the Hurricanes rallied in the top of the seventh inning with the go-ahead run scoring on Pollard-Brownell’s grounder. Mililani threatened again in the bottom of the inning with a two-out double, but Pollard-Brownell […]

Mililani and Kapolei meet for OIA D-I title

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 30, 2016

This much is certain, the OIA Division I softball title will remain in the west for a seventh consecutive year. Whether it stays in Mililani for a third straight season or heads down to Kapolei for the first time since 2005, well, that figures to be a toss-up. The Trojans and Hurricanes split their regular season matchups in tight contests and meet for a third time on Saturday with the OIA Division I title at stake. Mililani will attempt to […]

Another no-no for Pearl City’s ‘Peanut Butter’

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 28, 2016

Tyanna “Peanut Butter” Kaaialii was 11 when she was given her distinctive nickname upon joining a team in California. Now 16, the Pearl City junior distinguished herself over the last two days by playing a leading role in back-to-back no-hitters for the Chargers. A day after throwing the first four innings in Pearl City’s combined no-hitter against Moanalua, Kaaialii tossed a complete-game no-no in the Chargers’ 8-0 win at Kaiser on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the OIA Division I […]

Roosevelt fends off Waianae in wild seventh

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 27, 2016

Roosevelt and Waianae traded two-out rallies throughout a dramatic opening-round game in the OIA Division I softball playoffs on Wednesday before the host Rough Riders emerged with a 9-8 win at Stevenson Middle School. The Rough Riders and Seariders combined to score 10 runs with two out in the first-round game with Roosevelt delivering the final blow on D-Dre Wright’s walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh. Wright’s drive into the left-center gap to score Mika Emoto from second […]

Lileikis sets record at Dorothy Aki Invitational

By Jason Kaneshiro on December 30, 2015

Punahou’s Aukai Lileikis set a meet record in winning the 200-yard individual medley on the final day of the 39th Dorothy Aki/Kalani Invitational. Lileikis improved on his time of 1:50.14 in Tuesday’s preliminaries with a 1:49.01 on Wednesday. He broke the previous record set by ‘Iolani’s Kacy Johnson in 2010. Lileikis also won the 100-yard backstroke and swam on Punahou’s victorious 400 freestyle relay team  to help the Buffanblu finish atop the team standings. Punahou freshman Tyler Kawakami also picked […]

Another memorable season in the books

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 21, 2015

Another prep football season is in the books with Kahuku and Radford capturing the Division I and Division II state championships Friday night. Defense was the common theme in the first OIA sweep since 2003 — when Kahuku and Aiea paired titles in the inaugural year of Division II — with the Red Raiders and Rams delivering stifling performances to punctuate their title seasons. Personally, the privilege of covering high school football weekends from early August to late November provided […]
