By Jason Kaneshiro on June 14, 2016

Even as he pursued a Division I college football career at Nevada, Marc Ma already had plans to return to ‘Iolani to give back to the Raider program. “He told me on more than one occasion, ‘when I’m done with football I’m going to come home and I want to coach, because I want to help kids,’ ” said Matthew Ma, Marc’s older brother and fellow ‘Iolani graduate. “He wanted to give back to the school and he wanted to […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 13, 2016

After completing a deep postseason run, Kapolei softball coach Tony Saffery is probably due some time off from the field. He’ll give himself one day before getting back on the dirt. “Summer season starts as soon as we’re done here. We practice on Sunday,” Saffery said with a laugh Friday night. “It’s back to work. “It’s like no rest for the weary. I love it though, I truly do. I love the kids.” Along with leading Kapolei during the high […]

It took five innings, but Kapolei found its timing just in time to put together a rally that propelled the Hurricanes into Friday’s title game of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I Softball Championship. Outside of Sadie Kapaku-You’s swing on the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth inning in Thursday’s semifinal game, Kapolei was kept off balance by Pearl City junior Tyanna Kaaialii’s offspeed offerings while the Chargers executed at the plate to take a 5-1 lead. Kapaku-You’s home run […]

Cervantes’ gem caps day of dominance

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 12, 2016

Danielle Cervantes cringed a bit while acknowledging she had a no-hitter on her mind late in Campbell’s 8-0 win over Kamehameha on Wednesday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The junior right-hander took the no-no into the sixth inning before giving up a clean two-out single to Kamehameha’s Kalaihoku Kaneshiro. But Cervantes closed the inning with her 14th strikeout then struck out the side in the seventh to cap a day of remarkable pitching performances in the quarterfinal round of the […]

Pearl City keeps the no-hitters coming

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 11, 2016

No-hitters have become almost commonplace for Pearl City. Tyanna Kaaialii and Kristin Frost faced one batter over the minimum in the Chargers’ third no-hitter in their last six games and Pearl City rolled into the semifinals of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I Softball Championship with a 14-0 win in five innings over fourth-seeded Waiakea today. After holding off ‘Iolani in Tuesday’s late game, Kaaialii got the start today and struck out the side in the first inning with Waiakea’s lone baserunner […]

A day after striking out 16 while throwing 157 pitches in a win over Kaiser, Kim turned in a far more efficient performance while recording the second no-hitter in a state tournament in her career.
