By Jason Kaneshiro on August 20, 2016

Pearl City’s production on third down helped power the Chargers’ 27-0 win over Roosevelt in a duel of ball-control offenses on Friday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. The Chargers failed to convert on their first three third-down situations, but went 6-for-9 over the remainder of the game and turned in three of the night’s pivotal plays while facing third-and-long. >> Leading 6-0 lead on two Zameer Khan field goals, the Chargers faced third-and-9 early in the second quarter. Sabers searching for consistency

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 14, 2016

Campbell’s defense accomplished one of its primary objectives on Saturday. But sustained execution on offense remained elusive in a 34-14 loss to Farrington at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. After giving up 114 yards to Farrington running back Challen Faamatau last season and 142 to Ranan Mamiya the year before, the Sabers entered their regular-season opener looking to contain the Governors’ running game. They did that for the most part, keeping Faamatau from breaking loose while allowing 44 yards on 22 attempts […]

Hot start for Governors’ QB rotation

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 14, 2016

There was little separation between Justin Uahinui and Bishop Rapoza going into Farrington’s season opener and perhaps even less after the eighth-ranked Governors’ 34-14 win over Campbell on Saturday at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. The senior quarterbacks rotated every two plays and got off to a blistering start in completing 12 of 13 combined throws while helping the Governors’ take a 28-0 lead in the first half. Both cooled in the second, alternating in a run of seven straight incompletions, while […]

Watson keeps Nanakuli pushing forward

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 13, 2016

After two weeks, there are positions still to be solidified and adjustments to be made. But Nanakuli coach Keala Watson sees the Golden Hawks moving in a positive direction. Nanakuli fell to 0-2 overall with a 27-14 home loss to Aiea on Friday in the OIA opener for both teams. The Golden Hawks scored on the game’s opening possession but couldn’t quite keep up with an efficient Aiea passing game that relied on short throws to move the chains. After […]

Little things lead to big plays for Waianae QB

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 6, 2016

Jaren Ulu showed a willingness to absorb punishment in the pocket throughout No. 8 Waianae’s spectacular second-half duel with No. 4 Kamehameha on Friday night. The Searider quarterback wasn’t shy about delivering a blow either. Before slinging the decisive touchdown pass in Waianae’s breathtaking 26-20 opening-night win at Kamehameha’s Kunuiakea Stadium, Ulu’s turn as a lead blocker helped spark the Searider offense late in the third quarter. Both defenses controlled the action through the game’s first 31 minutes and Waianae […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on July 30, 2016

Star-Advertiser Preseason Top 10 Countdown Today: No. 7 Farrington Following his freshman year at Farrington, Challen Faamatau debated the benefits of an early jump to varsity football. “At first I wasn’t sure,” Faamatau said of moving up as a sophomore in 2014. “But then again I believe in myself and I told myself if I want to be the best I have to compete with the best no matter what age I am.” He teamed with standout senior Ranan Mamiya […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on July 28, 2016

Star-Advertiser Preseason Top 10 Countdown Today: No. 9 Kailua Coming off of a breakout season that earned Kailua defensive end Christian Mejia both first-team All-State honors and the attention of college coaches, the recruiting process remains a secondary concern while he prepares for his senior season.
