Na Menehune smarting from loss to Kahuku

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 25, 2016

Moanalua coach Savai’i Eselu arrived at the field on Saturday with a cast on his hand. By the end of the night, he had far too much company on the Na Menehune sideline in nursing an injury. Holding up against Kahuku’s red surge on both sides of the ball is challenging enough with a fully stocked depth chart. Moanalua’s was thinned early in Saturday’s 42-0 loss to the top-ranked Red Raiders, leaving Na Menehune hoping to get healthy in time […]

Banks takes aim at Nanakuli passing mark

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 24, 2016

Nanakuli coach Keala Watson put the ball in Nainoa Banks’ hands on Friday and the senior quarterback delivered the second highest passing total in school history. The Golden Hawks broke away from their ground-based attack and gave Banks an opportunity to fling the ball around Castle’s field in their penultimate game of the OIA Red schedule. Banks completed 26 of 48 attempts and made a run at the school record he set last season in throwing for 325 yards and […]

Castle’s McGoldrick thrives in role reversal

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 24, 2016

A proven playmaker catching the ball, Jeremy McGoldrick took advantage of his opportunity to sling it on Friday. Usually a dynamic wide receiver, McGoldrick made his first start at quarterback and contributed to all four Castle touchdowns in the Knights’ 30-16 win over Nanakuli on homecoming/senior night. McGoldrick found out he’d start at quarterback just before kickoff and scored on a 63-yard keeper on the third play of the game. He went on to run for 156 yards, threw for 237 yards […]

Defense keys Campbell’s overtime win

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 17, 2016

Defense defined Campbell’s first home game in nearly two years. While the Sabers gave away five turnovers against Moanalua on Friday, they countered with six takeaways and limited a prolific Na Menehune offense to 118 yards in total offense in a 12-6 win in double overtime on Friday night. Jaylen Ignatowski came up with Campbell’s first two turnovers with a fumble recovery and an interception in the first half. The Sabers and Na Menehune traded turnovers on a single play […]

Pacific’s Hawaii players enjoy ‘homecoming’

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 16, 2016

By design, Trey Kodama came up a few credits shy of completing his business degree at Pacific University last spring. Kodama was on track to finish his undergraduate work in finance and marketing in four years, but held off on taking his final class until the fall, thereby extending his football career with the Boxers and giving himself an opportunity to play one more game in Hawaii. The fifth-year senior and Kamehameha graduate returns to the Kapalama campus Saturday for […]

Kahuku still close to Semones’ heart

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 14, 2016

Just about a decade has passed since Doug Semones left Hawaii to continue his coaching career on the mainland. All the while, his devotion to the islands — Kahuku High School, in particular — never drifted far from this thoughts. Since relocating, Semones coached high school football in Idaho, crossed the country to take a job as an assistant at Yale before crossing back to take over as head coach at Occidental College in California. Throughout his travels, Semones made sure to […]

Nanakuli seniors celebrate the journey

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 10, 2016

The festivities following Nanakuli’s final home game of the season had the feel of graduation night. So although the Golden Hawks have three games left in the regular season, there was a sense of nostalgia for head coach Keala Watson after 21 seniors were recognized for their contributions to the program. “This is a special class,” Watson said as lei-covered players posed for photos with friends and family. “These guys have played Nanakuli football for five years rather than just […]

No. 8 Mililani regroups after hectic week

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 10, 2016

After playing two games in five days, Mililani will have close to two weeks to recharge for its next appearance. Last week’s approach of Hurricane Lester pushed the Trojans’ game against Kapolei to Monday. Following the 40-12 defeat to the visiting Hurricanes, Mililani had just three days to regroup before taking the field Friday at Nanakuli. While the Mililani offense struggled to find its groove early, the defense thrived and the Trojans eventually pulled away to a 42-0 bounce-back win […]
