Many (many) happy returns for Kahuku

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 15, 2016

Keeping the Kahuku defense out of the end zone has become just as difficult as scoring on the Red Raiders. The Red Raiders defense has contributed nine touchdowns to Kahuku’s scoring total this season while allowing just four against OIA competition. With cornerback Kekaula Kaniho’s 33-yard interception return in Friday’s 63-0 OIA Division I quarterfinal win over Leilehua, the Red Raiders have scored a defensive touchdown in seven of their nine games overall. That doesn’t even count the seven touchdowns […]

Failauga follows O-line’s lead for Waipahu

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 9, 2016

Although just a freshman, Waipahu running back Alfred Failauga is seasoned enough to appreciate the importance of sending credit to the guys up front. Moments after finishing off a 37-carry, 194-yard performance against Kalani on Saturday, Failauga’s opening comments were directed toward the Marauder offensive line. “I’d just like to thank my line for everything they do, Failauga said. “Without them I wouldn’t be anywhere.” The Waipahu line cleared the way for Failauga to post the seventh highest single-game rushing […]

Kaimuki win tightens OIA D-II race

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 8, 2016

Thanks to Kaimuki’s win over Pearl City on Friday, clarity in the OIA Division II race will have to wait. Five teams entered the weekend in contention for four playoff spots and the Bulldogs prevented Pearl City from clinching the division title when Daniel Nguyen’s interception with 1:24 left sealed Kaimuki’s 20-17 win over the host Chargers. The Bulldogs closed the regular season at 5-3 overall and 5-2 in the division and will track the division’s remaining four games to […]

Pearl City ready to break in new field

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 5, 2016

Monday’s practice wasn’t exactly just another workout for the Pearl City football teams. The school’s artificial turf field was cleared for use earlier in the day and the Chargers varsity and junior varsity teams held their first practices on the new playing surface. “They were totally excited,” Pearl City coach Robin Kami said. Pearl City had played its previous two “home” games this season at Aiea. While work on the accompanying track continues, the school received clearance to use the […]

Versatile Leilehua QBs share the load

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 1, 2016

Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda said the Mules had two starting quarterbacks prior to their matchup with Mililani. Sure enough, Kona Andres and Kaleo Aloha Piceno — Nos. 1 and 2 on the Leilehua roster — lined up side-by-side in the Leilehua backfield on the Mules’ first play from scrimmage on Friday. Andres ended up taking the first two snaps but alternated with Piceno in a 13-play opening drive. Andres went on to handle the bulk of the passing duties while throwing […]

Valladares provides spark for Trojans

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 1, 2016

Andrew Valladares didn’t contribute directly to the highest point total in the 38-game history of the Mililani-Leilehua rivalry. But big plays by the senior slot receiver helped ignite five of Mililani’s eight scoring drives in the Trojans’ 52-35 shootout win to close the regular season Friday night in Wahiawa. A 59-yard punt return set up Mililani’s first touchdown, two third-down receptions covering 31 and 30 yards in the fourth quarter led to scores and the Trojans (5-2 OIA Red) held […]

Leilehua and Mililani renew Central Oahu rivalry

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 29, 2016

Separated by just five miles along Kamehameha Highway, it took a change in division alignments to keep Mililani and Leilehua apart the last two football seasons. Reunited in the OIA Red this season, the Trojans and Mules close the regular season on Friday with a renewal of the Central Oahu rivalry. Leilehua leads the series 21-15-1 since its inception in 1975 although Mililani has a 12-5 edge since 2000 and won both meetings in 2013 before the two-year hiatus. Along […]

Meyer returns to Aloha Stadium with Wolf Pack

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 29, 2016

When Kalei Meyer returns to Aloha Stadium on Saturday, the Kamehameha graduate will be opposite the coach who recruited him to Nevada. In Nevada’s weekly press conference on Tuesday, Meyer credited then-Wolf Pack offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich for drawing him to Reno. With Rolovich now in his first season as Hawaii’s head coach, Meyer is among the Wolf Pack players looking forward to facing him in the Mountain West Conference opener for both Nevada and UH. “I’d have to say […]
