Na Menehune abound at Sony Open

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 10, 2017

As the sixth Hawaii player to qualify for this week’s Sony Open in Hawaii, Tadd Fujikawa was understandably gratified to earn a return to Waialae Country Club. Then he was reminded that three of those local entrants graduated from Moanalua. “OK, that’s really cool,” Fujikawa said, flashing that familiar wide smile. “To see so many guys from Moanalua playing well, we’ve all had our ups and downs and to step forward and make a name for ourselves is really special.” […]

The Campbell catcher helped lead the Sabers to the Division I state title in May and signed with reigning NCAA champion Oklahoma on Wednesday. Waianae and Saint Louis renew rivalry

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 6, 2016

Waianae and Saint Louis have a knack for meeting in inaugural events. When the Prep Bowl was instituted in 1973, legendary Waianae coach Larry Ginoza led the Seariders to a 6-0 win over the Crusaders in the first of eight meetings between the schools in the annual OIA-ILH postseason classic. Saint Louis has owned the series since. The programs met in the Prep Bowl seven times in a 12-year stretch from 1986 to 1997 during the Crusaders’ decade-plus of dominance. […]

Garden Isle next stop for Damien

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 5, 2016

Damien has enjoyed an abundance of preparation time over the last month. After pulling out a triple-overtime win over Pac-Five on Sept. 30, the Monarchs went close to three weeks without a game before facing Saint Francis in the ILH Division II championship game. That win gave them another two weeks to gear up for their opener in the D-II state tournament. Even so, Damien coach Eddie Klaneski wasn’t all that concerned about rust heading into the matchup with Waialua. […]

Waialua’s memorable run ends in Ewa Beach

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 5, 2016

As the last few Waialua players made their way toward the team bus to begin the journey from Ewa Beach back to the North Shore, Lincoln Barit took a moment to reflect on a season that will take a prominent place in Bulldogs lore. “The community, the family, the coaches, everybody came together. I’m so proud of the boys,” Barit said, then paused. “I get choked up every time I talk about them. It’s all them.” Waialua’s landmark campaign, Barit’s […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 29, 2016

Kamehameha’s Lexis Akeo is a sophomore with state championship credentials. ‘Iolani’s Ana Oglivie is a senior in her first season as a varsity setter. Both kept their teams on track this week to set up a rematch of last year’s Division I state tournament final. Akeo earned setting responsibilities as a freshman and helped pilot Kamehameha to a five-set victory over ‘Iolani in last year’s title match. Oglivie was on the other side of the net that night as the […]

Cowell powers Na Alii into semifinals

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 27, 2016

King Kekaulike coach Al Paschoal said there’s “a lot of chatter” regarding Chandler Cowell’s future. In the present, the Na Alii junior will likely be a focal point in the Kamehameha’s coaching staff’s discussions heading into Friday’s semifinal matchup in the New City Nissan/HHSAA Division I Girls Volleyball Championship. Cowell powered third-seeded King Kekaulike into the semifinals with 24 kills while hitting .388 in a four-set quarterfinal win over Kalaheo on Thursday at Moanalua. Kamehameha, the defending state champion, joined […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 23, 2016

Vavae Tata emerged from the Kahuku locker room and eased into one of Aloha Stadium’s orange seats to take in a bit of the second game of Saturday’s OIA semifinal doubleheader. The Kahuku coach was about 15 minutes removed from the Red Raiders’ resounding 38-0 victory over Waianae and touched on his postgame message to his team while Farrington and Kapolei went through their pregame routines on the field below. “We’re getting there, but we still haven’t played a complete […]
