Late defense helps Kalaheo advance to OIA semis

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 2, 2018

With Kalaheo clinging to a two-point lead, Mustang junior Ryan Pardini’s first priority was to keep the ball away from Kaiser sharpshooter Hunter Dias. When Dias worked free enough to receive a pass, Pardini did the next best thing. Dias had already drained six 3-pointers, the last with 31 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie Friday’s OIA Division I playoff game. Kalaheo regained the lead on Andrew Kearney’s drive 8 seconds later and the Mustangs figured Kaiser would […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 1, 2018

Kailua center Isaiah Hopson admittedly struggled during a four-game losing streak that left the Surfriders fifth in the OIA East standings entering the league playoffs. With the season on the line, the 6-foot-6 junior stepped up and stood tall indeed in Kailua’s 69-51 win over Aiea in Thursday’s opening-round elimination game in the OIA Division I boys basketball playoffs. “Tonight I wanted to redeem myself to my coach and prove that I can do better,” Hopson said after his 22-point […]

Mililani, Kaiser meet for OIA girls soccer title

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 26, 2018

Mililani’s defense helped the Trojans earn a shot at retaining the OIA Division I girls soccer title for a third straight year. Kaile Halvorsen, one of Oahu’s most dynamic scorers, helped power Kaiser into its first league championship game since 2014. The results of Thursday’s semifinal round create an intriguing matchup for the title on Saturday at Kapolei. Mililani has yet to give up a goal in three playoff matches this week and shut out previously unbeaten Pearl City in […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 19, 2018

Missy Moore had barely caught her breath after Kamehameha’s shootout victory over ‘Iolani to clinch a state tournament berth on Friday when the Warriors coach addressed the new format to the ILH girls soccer season. “It’s a lot more stressful,” Moore said as the Warriors’ celebrated a return to states after missing the tournament last year. Kamehameha and ‘Iolani split 1-0 wins in the regular season and closed the schedule at 9-1-1, forcing a playoff for the league’s first-round title […]

Kahuku returns to title game with comeback win

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 10, 2017

When Sol-Jay Maiava was struggling on Friday night — whether with his command or his ankle — the Kahuku quarterback’s focus turned to family. “i just thought of my mom, that’s about it,” Maiava said. A week after Maiava threw a game-winning touchdown late in a shootout victory over Mililani in the OIA Division I championship game, the sophomore’s radar appeared misaligned for much of Friday’s state tournament semifinal matchup with Waianae. He completed seven of his first 31 pass […]

Damien takes the next step

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 4, 2017

LIHUE >> Damien coach Eddie Klaneski took a moment for a deep exhale after the clock hit zeroes to punctuate the Monarchs’ win over Kauai on Saturday. The 13-10 victory at Vidinha Stadium was far from pretty, but as they had for much of the season, the Monarchs found a way to pull out a win, this one sending them to the Division I final of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships. In their third straight state tournament appearance, […]

Damien earns return trip to Kauai

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 27, 2017

Marcus Faufata-Pedrina conceded he’ll probably be a bit sore when he reports for Damien’s customary Saturday practice following a Friday game. But the Monarchs’ day-after workout will be something of a reward in itself for the senior quarterback. “We wanted to practice tomorrow and keep our season going,” Faufata-Pedrina said as his teammates celebrated the Monarchs’ 13-12 win over St. Francis and a third straight ILH Division II championship Friday night at Aloha Stadium. One point was the difference in […]
