On this date in 2003, Damien Torres proved without a shadow of a doubt that Kailua would be just fine at the running back position. Torres, a linebacker, torched McKinley for 184 rushing yards in a 26-21 victory over McKinley. Kamehameha senior Jordan Thibodeau broke the course record by more than 10 seconds to win the boys race and the first- and second-place girls destroyed the mark by more than 15 seconds. On this date in 1932, Rusty Blaisdell‘s McKinley crew looked like the team to beat. The Tigers opened their season with a 13-0 victory over the University of Hawaii, completely dominating the Deans on defense, rolling up a 141-24 yardage advantage in the first half. There is no such thing as just another ILH volleyball match. On this date in 2014, No. 1 Kamehameha swept Iolani 25-21, 25-23 at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium to improve to 8-0. Kealani Browne, Tiyana Hallums and Kayla Afoa led the way for the Warriors, but they were far from the only stars on the hill that night. On this date in 1951, Roosevelt scored seven unanswered touchdowns to rout Punahou 45-7 and retain the once-prestigious Paintbrush Trophy. It was Roosevelt’s most lopsided victory in the 20-year rivalry between the schools. The Rough Riders fumbled the ball eight times but only lost one. Roosevelt’s defense made up for it by picking off seven Punahou passes. On this date in 1974, Junior Doi hit Wayne Jandoc for a 98-yard touchdown pass and Roosevelt beat Kaiser 23-12. Doi threw a bomb from his end zone on third down with 10 seconds left and Jandoc corralled it on the 36 and outran two Cougars to the end zone. The score gave Roosevelt a 14-0 lead but Kaiser closed it to 17-12 before Wayde Au Young recovered a fumble and took it to the house to seal the victory. […]

On this date in 1987, Hilo ended Konawaena’s 40-game winning streak. The Vikings got five interceptions in the second half and Kamaka Mahoe hauled in a pass from Mark Ishii for the historic win. The Wildcats had not lost since 1982, when Hilo did the trick.
