HAWAII GROWN: Hawaii trio aiding in USC’s run for a national title

By Christian Shimabuku on April 24, 2019

There isn’t much that the Southern California women’s golf team hasn’t achieved in the 2018-2019 season. A No. 1 national ranking. A Pac-12 title. Six other tournament victories. As much of an individual sport the game of golf may be, the Trojans find team success by embracing competition within. Before almost every tournament, all 10 players on the roster are vying for five coveted spots. Punahou’s Allisen Corpuz and Aiko Leong, as well as Kaiser’s Malia Nam, make up 30 […]

By Christian Shimabuku on April 23, 2019

With its school facing closure at the end of the academic year, the St. Francis boys volleyball team is playing every game like it’s the last one. After a 29-27, 25-22, 25-18 sweep over University at its own gym on Tuesday night clinched the school its second consecutive ILH Division II title, that sentiment will take on a literal meaning for the Saints. With the league title secured, the Saints now set their sights toward their second state title in […]

Kamehameha’s Kelena Sauer tosses 2-hit shutout to open ILH tournament

By Christian Shimabuku on April 20, 2019

With the way Kamehameha’s Kelena Sauer was throwing against Mid-Pacific, one run was all he needed. Beau Sylvester made sure he got it. Sylvester broke a scoreless tie with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning and Sauer worked a perfect seventh inning to complete a 1-0 shutout over the Owls (7-8) to open the ILH double-elimination tournament on Saturday at Ala Wai field. Sauer struck out five, walked one and allowed two infield hits for […]

Waianae softball team makes statement

By Christian Shimabuku on April 18, 2019

Waianae wasn’t fazed by No. 2 Roosevelt’s previously undefeated record heading into Thursday’s OIA quarterfinals. Come playoff time, every team comes in with a clean slate. So when the Seariders (9-5) dealt the Rough Riders (12-1) their first loss of the season in a 7-4 victory at Stevenson Middle School, it wasn’t necessarily viewed as an upset to those on the team that put the work in, despite the discrepancy in seeding. Waianae entered as the No. 4 seed from […]

D-II St. Francis forces Punahou into ILH D-I softball tiebreaker

By Christian Shimabuku on April 13, 2019

St. Francis coach Randy Langsi says his team plays every game like it’s their last. With the school set to close at the end of May, maybe that line of thinking is warranted. But against No. 2 Punahou, the No. 9 Saints were up against the ILH’s elite. A petition for St. Francis to move up from Division II to Division I in ILH and state competition was denied twice on March 22, and Friday’s game at Ala Wai Park […]

HAWAII GROWN: Saint Louis alum Pono Anderson works his way to D-I

By Christian Shimabuku on April 10, 2019

Two schools in two separate mainland states can be a lot for someone who wasn’t supposed to leave home in the first place, but Pono Anderson has taken every new opportunity in stride. Anderson signed with Hawaii during his senior year at Saint Louis but ended up at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix instead. Now as a senior at Texas-Arlington, Anderson was the subject of Wednesday’s Hawaii Grown feature in the Star-Advertiser, which can be read here. “When I […]

HG: CSU Bakersfield teammates make life easier for each other

By Christian Shimabuku on March 27, 2019

Cal State Bakersfield’s Chris Hipa and Cydney Curran are used to facing each other on the big stage. For two straight years during their prep softball days in Hawaii, Curran and Campbell got the best of Hipa’s higher-seeded Kamehameha teams at the HHSAA state championships. The Sabers beat the top-seeded Warriors 5-0 in the quarterfinals in 2014. Then in 2015, Campbell won 7-1 in the semifinals before it went on to win first of three consecutive HHSAA titles. When it […]

HAWAII GROWN: College baseball roundup

By Christian Shimabuku on March 19, 2019

Hilo native and St. Joseph alum Edgar Barclay had a homecoming he’ll always remember, and one the team on the other side would like to forget. The Cal State Bakersfield junior hurled a shutout against Hawaii on Sunday in a 2-0 win for the Roadrunners.
