COUNTDOWN: UH commit Kilohana Haasenritter adds another weapon for No. 9 Hilo

By Christian Shimabuku on July 25, 2019

Hilo’s football team is currently on its best run in program history, reaching the last two HHSAA Division I finals after having never done so before 2017. The Vikings prevailed 35-19 over Damien in 2017 before falling to Waipahu 42-22 in 2018. In retrospect, coach Kaeo Drummundo saw a young and inexperienced squad that fateful day last November at Aloha Stadium. As the team turns the page to 2019 with most of its young core back, that inexperience has turned […]

Saint Louis WR Koali Nishigaya stands out among award winners at GPA showcase

By Christian Shimabuku on June 6, 2019

Koali Nishigaya has been a reliable target in the Saint Louis receiving corps, catching 68 passes for 909 yards and six touchdowns in his two seasons of varsity ball. But the sure-handed receiver recognizes the stakes heading into his senior season. Coaches and teammates have raved about Nishigaya in the past, but he still remains lightly recruited, even as a staple on a consensus top-10 team nationally. “Not really a lot right now,” he said when asked of college interest. […]

Hawaii Grown: Jocelyn Alo not focused on anyone’s expectations but her own

By Christian Shimabuku on May 22, 2019

Perhaps the only downside of the sensational freshman year Jocelyn Alo had at Oklahoma was how remarkably high it set the bar for year two. Last season, Alo led the nation with 30 home runs while hitting .420 and a team-high 72 RBI, and was awarded with National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American honors. She was also named Freshman of the Year by both the NFCA and Big 12 Conference. Fans across the country eagerly wondered what she would do for an […]

By Christian Shimabuku on May 8, 2019

Bittersweet? Maybe a little bit. For Long Beach State sophomore Ethan Siegfried, two NCAA championships in as many years has been a thrill. The Punahou alumnus, who was a starter on the 49ers squad that took down Hawaii in Saturday’s NCAA Division I men’s volleyball championship game in four sets, was the featured athlete in this week’s Hawaii Grown, which can be read here. “Before and after it was a little mixed, just because of the fact that you’re playing […]

Noah Wusstig works his way to state judo slam

By Christian Shimabuku on May 4, 2019

Noah Wusstig’s road to historic territory wasn’t as easy as he made it look. The Moanalua senior took home his fourth consecutive HHSAA judo title on Saturday evening with an ippon of Kapolei’s Grayson Ferreira in the 145-pound finals, which lasted 37 seconds. But in between Wusstig’s coronation at the Stan Sheriff Center and his two other individual state titles in wrestling was plenty of sacrifice, along with the pressure that came with heightened expectations. “It’s been really hard. I […]

By Christian Shimabuku on May 4, 2019

The Moanalua girls also took home their respective team title for the second year in a row with 84 total points. Punahou was in second with 53 points, followed by Mililani’s 52. “For the first one, it was so special last year that we didn’t know if we would have this opportunity again so to get it back-to-back, it was super special for our team and they worked so hard for it,” Moanalua girls coach Derron Maki said, who is […]

Radford draws on past letdowns to break through for OIA D-II crown

By Christian Shimabuku on April 27, 2019

Radford was in the game it wanted to be in both times last year, but fell short in both the OIA and HHSAA championship games. It did prepare them for Saturday, when they again found themselves in the OIA Division II championship game. This time, there was no doubt, and the Rams broke through with a 14-2 mercy rule victory in five innings over Waipahu. “Knowing a lot of the guys played here last year, I think just knowing the […]

Kamehameha was winning 4-0 halfway through the third inning when the game was postponed.
