Roosevelt runs its way to season-ending win

By Christian Shimabuku on September 23, 2016

Run-heavy might be an understatement. Roosevelt threw the ball twice in its season finale, a 28-8 victory over Kalaheo on homecoming and senior night. The rest of the Rough Riders’ plays from scrimmage? Four touchdowns on 57 rushes and 203 yards. “The offense did a hell of a job,” coach Kui Kahooilihala said. “They executed their plays and they did it the whole week with walk-throughs.” The Rough Riders lined up in the option offense throughout the game and used […]

Faamatau’s college stock rising

By Christian Shimabuku on September 20, 2016

Farrington running back Challen Faamatau was featured in today’s print edition of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. (http://www.staradvertiser.com/2016/09/20/sports/farringtons-faamatau-is-in-hot-pursuit-with-a-purpose/) The senior talked briefly about his college recruitment. Due to NCAA rules, he has not qualified academically due to his SAT and as a result hasn’t fielded an offer yet. He is taking the SAT in November and December and can qualify academically for the NCAA if he gets a high enough score. If so, his recruiting activity could really increase. “I wouldn’t care […]

Governors keep Sula with them

By Christian Shimabuku on September 18, 2016

Behind Farrington’s record-breaking performance on Saturday night was a player that didn’t accumulate any statistics for the Governors. Wesley Sula would have been a senior at Farrington had he not had his life tragically taken away during a stabbing in April. Saturday night’s game against Nanakuli doubled up as senior night and homecoming for the Govs. The team carried his jersey out during Farrington’s singing of the alma mater. “I was waiting for a time where we could do that,” […]

Saints overcome adversity for first ILH win

By Christian Shimabuku on September 17, 2016

Facing an early 20-0 deficit in the second quarter was not something that St. Francis wanted, but it wasn’t something that it wasn’t ready for. “It definitely wasn’t part of the game plan,” Saints coach Kip Akana said. “We talked to the kids last week about how we want to meet adversity.” The Saints (2-2, 1-1 ILH) stormed back to score 24 unanswered points and eventually beat the Wolfpack (2-2, 0-2) 30-27 in a back-and-forth battle. St. Francis’ rally was […]

Piceno does it all for Leilehua

By Christian Shimabuku on September 11, 2016

There’s a reason Kaleo Aloha Piceno is listed as an athlete on the Leilehua roster. The senior lined up at quarterback, running back and wide receiver in the Mules’ 37-15 victory over Kailua on Saturday night, and has done so throughout the season. “I’m just blessed that the coaches trust in me,” Piceno said. “I’m just able to lead these guys and they’re making me look good. That’s how I see it.” Piceno displayed the skills necessary for each position […]

Kahuku undaunted by Bishop Gorman challenge

By Christian Shimabuku on September 10, 2016

The time has come. Kahuku’s only nonconference game of the season will be played in Las Vegas against consensus No. 1 Bishop Gorman a week from today. The Red Raiders (5-0, 5-0 OIA Blue) have yet to be challenged thus far, winning by an average of 46.4 points. They have not allowed a point for 14 straight quarters. Enter Bishop Gorman. The Gaels (3-0) have won all three games against out-of-state competition, including a 44-14 road win at Cedar Hill […]

Radford still adjusting to Division I

By Christian Shimabuku on September 3, 2016

The fine line between Division I and Division II can be measured in wins and losses for the Radford football team. Last year’s team went a perfect 13-0 en route to an HHSAA Division II state championship. It was the school’s only state championship in the divisional format. It also won the Oahu Prep Bowl in 1981. This year’s team is currently 0-4 and 0-3 in OIA play and has lost by an average of 36 points per game. “It’s […]

‘Iolani working to prove it belongs in D-I

By Christian Shimabuku on August 28, 2016

Changes to the state football tournament haven’t changed ‘Iolani’s outlook. As far as they’re concerned, there’s still a full ILH season to be played. The Raiders (3-0) face Saint Louis, Kamehameha and Punahou twice each over the next six weeks, starting with the Crusaders on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. “We’re gonna have to battle and play pretty flawless to stay in the hunt,” coach Wendell Look said. “We’re going to face teams that are physically bigger and just better […]
