By Christian Shimabuku on January 21, 2017

Leilehua senior Charles Moku Watson was the first player in Hawaii from the class of 2017 to commit to Oregon State during the first annual Polynesian Bowl on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. Kahuku’s Kesi Ah-Hoy, who originally committed to Hawaii, could soon be joining him. Ah-Hoy has opened up his recruiting and is choosing between Hawaii and Oregon State after a home visit from the Beavers’ coaching staff made him reconsider his options. The Beavers originally recruited him as […]

Gomera-Stevens, Warriors begin stretch run

By Christian Shimabuku on January 17, 2017

The Kamehameha girls’ soccer team has a crucial week of action which will likely decide the ILH race. Led by senior Makamae Gomera-Stevens, who was featured in Tuesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the Warriors are 8-1-1. They face Punahou (8-1-1) today and ‘Iolani (8-0-2) on Saturday to close out the regular season. Despite a 68-3 goal differential, the Buffanblu and Raiders are the only teams that the Warriors haven’t defeated this season. Punahou defeated Kamehameha, 2-1 on Dec. 17. Three days later, […]

Campbell’s Tynanes overcomes knee injury

By Christian Shimabuku on January 10, 2017

Campbell senior Micah Tynanes, who was the prep feature in today’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser, is hoping for his second straight sweep of the OIA and state wrestling titles next month. He won both in the 195-pound weight class last year and will most likely compete at 220 this year in order for Campbell to have a complete lineup. However, a 25-pound jump in weight class won’t be his toughest obstacle on the road to a repeat. As a defensive lineman on […]

‘Iolani’s Pascua keeping options open

By Christian Shimabuku on December 6, 2016

After playing the last football game of his prep career, a 31-20 loss to Mililani in the HHSAA Division I state title game, ‘Iolani senior KJ Pascua wasn’t sure if he was done with football altogether. The Raiders’ three-sport star was the focus of Tuesday’s prep feature in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. On the gridiron, he carried the load at running back for the Raiders on his way to All-ILH first team honors in 2014, ’15 and ’16. However, his wrestling […]

Kahuku’s dynamic D finishes a win short

By Christian Shimabuku on November 20, 2016

Kahuku went 24-2 overall in the past two seasons, thanks in large part to a suffocating defense led by its secondary. Starting cornerbacks Kekaula Kaniho and Stokes Nihipali-Bothelho, both seniors, ended their high school careers with a 30-14 loss to Saint Louis in the HHSAA Open division championship game. Though it’s not the way either wanted to end their prep careers, both took it in stride. “They earned that win. Any team can win on any given night and they […]

‘Iolani makes statement just getting to final

By Christian Shimabuku on November 19, 2016

‘Iolani’s journey toward a state title ended with a 31-20 loss to Mililani in the HHSAA Division I championship game. And what a journey it was. The Raiders’ (5-8) roller coaster season started with a perfect nonconference record after wins over Radford, Waimea and La Jolla Country Day (Calif.). The Raiders followed with seven losses in as many weeks to Saint Louis, Kamehameha and Punahou in ILH Division I play. “You’ve got to give this senior class credit,” ‘Iolani coach […]

Lahainaluna finally gets it done in a state final

By Christian Shimabuku on November 18, 2016

Fourth time’s the charm for the Lahainaluna football team. After losing in the 2007, ’12 and ’14 HHSAA Division II state championship games, the Lunas finally got over the hump with a 21-14 win over Kapaa on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. “Man, it feels great. Our team has worked so hard,” senior defensive lineman Hoaka Phillips said. “We struggled in the beginning but we improved so much. It just feels amazing.” Lahainaluna is just the second non-Oahu team to […]

Phifer ends career with school record

By Christian Shimabuku on November 11, 2016

Kawai Phifer went out with a bang. The Leilehua senior, listed as an athlete on the team roster, hauled in a school-record 233 receiving yards in a 51-35 loss to Mililani on Friday in the Division I semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships. The previous record was held by Darrien Shealy, who had 217 receving yards in 2010, also against Mililani. “The coaches always taught us to push through and fight until the end,” Phifer said. Despite […]
