Klaneski wants to end title chase next week

By Christian Shimabuku on October 13, 2017

Damien coach Eddie Klaneski hopes history will repeat itself when the Monarchs and St. Francis meet again for the ILH Division II championship at Aloha Stadium. Next Saturday’s matchup will mark exactly one year since Damien beat St. Francis 20-12 in Halawa to win the 2016 ILH Division II title. Like last year, both teams split the season series. The main difference this time around is that the Saints will have to beat the top-seeded Damien twice to claim the […]

Ulufale has career day with broken hand

By Christian Shimabuku on October 8, 2017

AJ Ulufale left it all on the field on Saturday at Kozuki Stadium. The Pac-Five senior, who has taken turns at wide receiver, running back and quarterback for the Wolfpack this season, rushed for a game-high 158 yards on 29 carries in a 34-0 loss to ‘Iolani. He did so with a cast on his broken left hand. Doctors told Ulufale not to play, but he didn’t listen. “This might be my last time playing football and I’m not gonna […]

Waipahu pushing to avoid last season’s fate

By Christian Shimabuku on October 7, 2017

Waipahu’s motivation this entire season is to make sure it doesn’t end like the one before. After Friday’s resounding 56-0 win over McKinley at Roosevelt to close out the regular season, the Marauders (8-0, 7-0 OIA Division II) are in a position to achieve that goal. Last year’s edition was the top seed in the OIA Division II playoffs, made it to the championship game, and lost 36-35 to Waialua. Their next game was the first round of the state […]

Mililani’s Gabriel shakes off gaudy numbers

By Christian Shimabuku on September 30, 2017

Miliani quarterback Dillon Gabriel was masterful on Saturday night, shredding Kailua for 431 yards on 19 for 32 passing and five touchdowns in a 52-0 rout. The performance put him in a tie for the second most amount of yards in a game in school history, with former Trojan star and current Central Florida signal-caller McKenzie Milton. It also put his career total over the 5,000-yard mark — 5,069 to be exact. He is already over 2,000 yards this season. […]

Kalani closes season on high note

By Christian Shimabuku on September 29, 2017

No team wants to have its season end in September, but no team wants to end its season with a loss, either. With full knowledge that Friday night’s contest would be its last of the season, Kalani rode the electric arm of Seth Tina-Soberano and kept its foot on the pedal in a 41-13 rout of Kalaheo in what doubled up as homecoming and senior night for the Falcons. “It’s great to end the season like this. It’s great to […]

Nawahine enjoying his time at Kahuku

By Christian Shimabuku on September 23, 2017

Enoch Nawahine is making the most of his time at Kahuku in what will be his only season suiting up for the Red Raiders. That’s because the senior spent the first three years of his prep career at Punahou, where he was in a crowded backfield on a team that was pass heavy in 2016 and relied on star Wayne Taulapapa to run the ball in 2015. “I just wanted to come home and play with family and friends, and […]

Roosevelt on verge of rare playoff berth

By Christian Shimabuku on September 23, 2017

Roosevelt is on the verge of its first OIA playoff berth since 2007 after Friday’s 30-10 homecoming victory over Kalani, thanks in large part to an unwavering approach toward coach Kui Kahooilihala’s philosophies: run, run and run some more. The Rough Riders still hadn’t earned a first down when they trailed 10-0 with the ball on their own 20 with 7:02 remaining in the first half. Regardless, they wore the Falcons down with their run game and cut the deficit […]

Adkins-Kupukaa has Campbell thinking division title

By Christian Shimabuku on September 16, 2017

The state’s leading receiver is also making his presence felt on defense. Campbell sophomore Pokii Adkins-Kupukaa was sensational on Friday night in a 35-19 win at Radford, hauling in four passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns. He also added two interceptions on top of returning kickoffs and punts for No. 10 Sabers (5-2, 5-1 OIA Blue), who have won five of their last six. “The struggle is real, just gotta fight through it every day,” he said when asked […]
