Punahou takes control of ILH boys soccer race

By Christian Shimabuku on December 21, 2017

Thursday afternoon’s boys soccer match between Saint Louis and Punahou was an early battle for first place in the ILH, as the Buffanblu and Crusaders both entered undefeated with no ties. The contest proved to be a true measuring stick for the Crusaders, who made the move back to Division I after appearing in last season’s HHSAA Division II finals. Punahou, meanwhile, is the two-time defending state champion in D-I. In the end, Punahou’s experience and composure proved too much […]

Washington erased all self-doubt for Tupuola-Fetui

By Christian Shimabuku on December 20, 2017

Pearl City senior Zion Tupuola-Fetui became one of the first players from Hawaii to take advantage of new rules that allowed him to sign his National Letter of Intent early, putting his commitment to Washington in ink on Wednesday morning. If you were to tell him he would be in this position a year ago, he probably would have laughed. “I wouldn’t believe you,” he said. “Not for a second.” The towering defensive end and outside linebacker, who projects to […]

Mariota, Buckner have played each other before

By Christian Shimabuku on December 15, 2017

When the Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers square off at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday, it will be a reunion of sorts for former Oregon teammates Tennessee quarterback Marcus Mariota and San Francisco defensive lineman DeForest Buckner. The two former Ducks will play on the same field for the first time since the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship — a 42-20 loss to Ohio State — but it won’t be the first time they’ve played against each other. As ILH […]

Saint Louis’ 31-28 victory over Kahuku in the HHSAA Division I Open championship game featured three UH commits. Quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, receiver Jonah Panoke and defensive back Kai Kaneshiro are all Crusaders who have verbally pledged to join the Rainbow Warriors for the 2018 season. Mitchell Quinn, another senior, could soon be joining them as well. He picked […]

Tufaga burns hometown team once again

By Christian Shimabuku on November 19, 2017

For the second year in a row, Saint Louis safety Isaiah Tufaga made a game-changing play against his hometown team on the biggest stage possible. In Saturday night’s 31-28 victory over Kahuku in the Open Division final of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships, the Laie native intercepted Red Raiders’ quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava for a 40-yard touchdown that gave the Crusaders a 24-7 lead with 5:30 remaining in the third quarter. “Shoutout to my teammates for doing what they […]

Kickers fuel classic overtime championship battle

By Christian Shimabuku on November 19, 2017

In the midst of Lahainaluna’s 75-69 instant classic thriller that went seven overtimes against Konawaena, Lunas coach Garret Tihada admits that his eyes were glued to his watch as much as they were on the field. “We had a bus at 7 and we had to get on that plane back home. I didn’t know how it was gonna work out for us,” Tihada said of the win that gave Lahainaluna its second consecutive HHSAA Division II state title. With […]
