Damien turns to its seniors to win another title

By Christian Shimabuku on April 28, 2018

With his team on the verge of accomplishing the improbable for the second year in a row, Damien coach Timo Donahue turned to the guys he did it with before. After St. Francis won the regular season title last year, Damien had to beat St. Francis four times in a row to win the ILH’s second division and the league’s lone state berth. The Monarchs were put in the exact same situation this season and Saturday’s game at Hans L’Orange […]

By Christian Shimabuku on April 24, 2018

Showing that it’s not content with an ILH regular season title and the comfort of an automatic state berth, Mid-Pacific rode the arm of Shion Matsushita to a 3-1 first round victory over Saint Louis on Monday at Damon Field. The Owls’ ace pitched a complete game gem and only needed an astounding 55 pitches to get the job done. He was also buoyed by an impeccable defense led by shortstop Wyatt Young, who often made challenging plays look routine. […]

OIA champion Farrington makes history

By Christian Shimabuku on April 21, 2018

In order for Farrington’s baseball team to make history on Saturday, it first had to defy it. For starters, there was recent history. The Governors were going up against a Radford team that had beaten them twice earlier in the season. To make circumstances more challenging, the Rams trotted out ace Jack Dillon to start the game, who tossed a no-hitter against Farrington last year. With the odds stacked against them, the Governors prevailed 6-4 to give the school its […]

By Christian Shimabuku on April 19, 2018

After Punahou’s 25-17, 25-22, 25-11 sweep of ‘Iolani at Mid-Pacific’s Mills gym on Thursday night, the Buffanblu (13-0) clinched their 15th straight ILH title and remain undefeated for the season, having lost only one set the entire year. Coach Rick Tune said he isn’t keeping count of the two prodigious steaks that his team is currently on. He just wants his guys to keep improving each time they step on the court. “We just take it one match at a […]

The Rough Riders (11-1) won their second matchup against the Cougars (9-3) in a rain-shortened 5-inning game at McKinley, avenging a 6-4 loss at Kaiser on March 20. “A win is a win,” Roosevelt coach Kris Fujii-Dias said. “Postseason is what matters, so we […]

Ranches’ big day fuels Campbell in win

By Christian Shimabuku on April 7, 2018

Alesia Ranches was unstoppable on Saturday for Campbell, making her presence known at the plate and in center field during a 5-2 victory over Pearl City. Ranches, who admits she was going through bit of a slump heading in to the game, returned to form in a big way. The junior went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI in addition to stellar outfield play. The win for Campbell breaks a streak of consecutive losses to Kapolei and […]

Moanalua pulls out 14-13 win over Kaiser

By Christian Shimabuku on April 4, 2018

Wednesday afternoon’s OIA East baseball matchup between Kaiser and Moanalua produced a total of 30 hits, nine errors and two disappointed coaches. Na Menehune’s 14-13 walk-off victory over the Cougars on senior night never failed to entertain, with each team taking advantage of the other’s mistakes. Despite trailing 13-10 entering the home half of the seventh, Moanalua (6-4) rallied to top Kaiser (5-4) after Andrew Oasay was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. “We can fight back. We’re […]

OIA West wide open as Kapolei beats No. 1 Campbell

By Christian Shimabuku on March 29, 2018

The parity that exists at the top of the OIA West just got even more condensed after No. 4 Kapolei’s 11-3 home victory over No. 1 Campbell on Thursday. The Sabers (5-2) led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third innings, but the Hurricanes (5-3) exploded for eight runs to break the game open. Kapolei was lifted by the stellar pitching performance of Cira Bartolotti, a recent University of Hawaii commit. The junior didn’t give up any runs after […]
