Campbell poised for a big year in 2019

By Christian Shimabuku on November 16, 2018

Truth be told, Tyrese Tafai would have rather spent his birthday on the field with the rest of his Campbell teammates. The junior linebacker, who has missed more than half of the season with a shoulder injury, could only watch in street clothes as the Sabers fell to Mililani 24-2 in the Open Division semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. Campbell trailed 7-2 at halftime but turned the ball over five […]

Senituli Punivai leads major turnaround at Castle in 2018

By Christian Shimabuku on October 30, 2018

When Castle went 0-3 to start its season, coach John Hao knew it was time for a change. The team’s pure pass offense was executing at a rate indicative of its record, and Hao held auditions for the team’s next quarterback. That’s when senior Senituli Punivai stepped up. He was a cornerback, linebacker, wide receiver and running back in his two years of varsity ball for the Knights, but never a quarterback. Not even in his Pop Warner days during […]

Format leaves No. 2 Punahou out of the state tournament

By Christian Shimabuku on October 27, 2018

Saturday night’s ILH Open Division title clash between No. 1 Saint Louis and No. 2 Punahou at Aloha Stadium had all the makings of a high-stakes matchup. Perhaps too high, as the loser would have its season automatically end in October. After a 45-21 win for the Crusaders, it was the Buffanblu who suffered a season-ending loss despite finishing with a 7-3 record in the first season of Open Division play. They are also the No. 2-ranked team in the […]

Kaimuki hopes to regroup after disappointing loss

By Christian Shimabuku on October 26, 2018

After shaking hands with Roosevelt in a hard fought OIA Division II title game, Kaimuki’s players walked toward the north exit of Aloha Stadium in visible disappointment, wondering what could have been. A 28-18 loss to the Rough Riders stripped the Bulldogs of what would have been the program’s third OIA title and first since 2007. Instead, it was Roosevelt that stuck around for an extended celebration after winning its first ever OIA crown. Not all is lost for the […]

Roosevelt continues historic run

By Christian Shimabuku on October 20, 2018

The Roosevelt football team has been on a steady climb, more than doubling its wins in each of Kui Kahooilihala’s three years at the helm. Up next for the 9-2 Rough Riders? A chance to do something that’s never been done in program history. Roosevelt has never won an OIA or state championship, but after Saturday night’s 23-7 win over Pearl City, the Rough Riders set up a date with Kaimuki for the OIA Division II Championship game on Oct. […]

Roosevelt 23, Pearl City 7, FINAL ———- 7:16: Roosevelt runs out the clock and 23-7 is your final. The Rough Riders clinch a spot in the OIA championship game and Division II state tournament all at once for the first time since 2007. 7:10: Roosevelt makes a goal line stand on Pearl City and gets the ball back with 3:31 left up 23-7. Look for them to run out the clock here. 6:58: Roosevelt is forced into punting again. BUT […]

Kahuku honors Tommy Heffernan Sr. with emotional win

By Christian Shimabuku on October 20, 2018

Many tributes were paid to the late Tommy Heffernan Sr., who passed away on Tuesday, at Kahuku on Friday night. A shrine with pictures of Heffernan was placed outside of the Red Raiders’ locker room along with a chair that had his clothing on it, including a Vietnam War Veteran hat. Junior varsity and varsity players gathered and prayed there before and after their games. A moment of silence was also held before the varsity game. It was all a […]

GAME NIGHT 10/19: Kapolei/Kahuku

By Christian Shimabuku on October 19, 2018

No. 5 Kahuku 33, Kapolei 13, Final ———- 10:09: Kapolei turns it over on downs one last time, Kahuku takes one final knee, and 33-13 is your final. Kapolei must now await the end of the Campbell-Waianae game to know its fate. 10:03: Heffernan gets his second score of the day on a 2-yard rush and this one’s pretty much over. Erickson’s extra point attempt is no good but the Kahuku lead is 33-13 with 1:22 to go. 9:58: Kapolei […]
