Farrington’s Lavenia Fotu returns to knock off No. 1 seed

By Christian Shimabuku on December 22, 2018

Farrington’s Lavenia Fotu was a state champion at 225 pounds in 2017 as a sophomore. But as a junior, she never got a chance to defend her title. “I wasn’t (at states). I was on the team, towards the ending I did something,” she said. “I ruined my last three matches of the season and I got kicked off the team.” But there Fotu was on the first day of the Hawaii Officials Tournament at Leilehua on Friday, looking to […]

Faatui Tuitele’s UW signing goes beyond football

By Christian Shimabuku on December 19, 2018

Faatui Tuitele could have attended virtually any school he wanted to. All four participants in this year’s College Football Playoff extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-4, 299-pound defensive tackle. His final five included the likes of traditional powerhouses in Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Texas. So when he announced his commitment to Washington on Nov. 18, the decision went beyond football. It was about finding the place where he felt most at peace. On Wednesday afternoon on campus, Tuitele made […]

Gino Quinones, Ben Scott ready for life in the Pac-12

By Christian Shimabuku on December 19, 2018

Gino Quinones and Ben Scott didn’t have a single FBS offer when both signing periods came and went as juniors. Then on April 16, Hawaii offered both of them. After big summers and stellar senior seasons, each signed pledges to Pac-12 schools on Wednesday at Saint Louis’ campus. Scott, who verbally committed to Arizona State in August, made it official after signing his letter of intent. Quinones signed with Southern California, his dream school, after committing in May. “It’s super […]

The future is just as bright for No. 1 Crusaders

By Christian Shimabuku on November 25, 2018

Since its inauguration in 2016, the HHSAA Open Division has known no other winner than Saint Louis. The Crusaders made history by winning their third consecutive state title with a 38-17 rout over Mililani that was not as close as the scoreboard indicated. Saint Louis (11-0) racked up 444 yards of total offense. Defenders were flying all over the field, never giving Trojan quarterback Dillon Gabriel room to breathe. It was clearly the most dominating win for the Crusaders during […]

Unutoa moves mountains in Kapaa’s narrow defeat

By Christian Shimabuku on November 24, 2018

Saturday’s HHSAA Division II championship game saw Lahainaluna win its third straight state title in a row with a 34-32 win over Kapaa. The Lunas rallied from a 26-7 halftime deficit and did so as a team, chipping away at the Warriors one drive at a time. But under the bright afternoon shine of Aloha Stadium, one player stood out among the rest. At a strapping 6-foot-5 and 290 pounds, Kapaa right guard Eli Unutoa was physically head and shoulders […]

Crusaders poised to make history with 3-peat

By Christian Shimabuku on November 21, 2018

Faatui Tuitele will be wearing a variety of jerseys in the months to come. But before the recent Washington commit suits up in the 2019 All-American Bowl and Polynesian Bowl before heading to Seattle, one thing’s for sure. Saturday night’s Open Division final against Mililani in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships will be his last time donning a Saint Louis uniform. “It’s gonna be a real sad moment, not gonna lie. Being here at Saint Louis since I […]

Latu stands out on loaded Crusaders defense

By Christian Shimabuku on November 17, 2018

It may be hard for a player to stand out on a team chock-full of college prospects like Saint Louis, but Kamo’i Latu hasn’t stopped making plays with his team’s season on the line. The No. 9 team in the nation according to MaxPreps has faced do-or-die scenarios in each of its last two games, and the safety ensured the Saints will keep marching. In Friday night’s second semifinal game in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships against Kahuku, […]
