Bryson Ewaliko saves Kailua’s win over Castle

By Christian Shimabuku on March 15, 2019

With a new name, Bryson Ewaliko is still at the top of his game. The Kailua senior, known as Bryson Ballesteros until just two weeks ago, locked down the save in Kailua’s 7-4 win over Castle on Friday afternoon. Ewaliko was overpowering in his one inning of work, striking out two Knights before getting Ian Rivera to fly out to end the game. Ewaliko earned Star-Advertiser first-team All-State honors as a junior alongside teammate Stone Parker and Waiakea’s David Nakamura, […]

By Christian Shimabuku on February 13, 2019

Southern California junior Kyle Suppa is in the midst of his best string of college golf, and like any successful amateur athlete, he can’t help but think about a professional career at times. “It’s definitely something I think about quite a bit,” Suppa said Tuesday. “Being able to prepare my game once I leave school and be able to make it at a professional level.” The 2016 Punahou alumnus was featured in Wednesday morning’s Hawaii Grown feature in the Star-Advertiser, […]

Liufau ready to continue Punahou-Notre Dame pipeline

By Christian Shimabuku on February 6, 2019

Punahou’s reputation at Notre Dame precedes Marist Liufau . Fellow Buffanblu products Robby Toma and Manti Te’o both chose the Irish and starred in South Bend from 2009 to 2012. Most fans will remember Toma as a sure-handed receiver and Te’o as a clutch linebacker who finished as the Heisman Trophy runner-up during his senior season. No defensive player has placed that high in the voting ever since. “It’s an honor just being able to follow in their footsteps while […]

By Christian Shimabuku on February 6, 2019

Kaulana Makaula always knew this day was going to come. He just didn’t envision it with him covered in cardinal and gold. But on Wednesday morning at the Elks Lodge in Waikiki, the Punahou senior put pen to paper, making his commitment to Southern California official on a scholarship offer made less than two weeks ago. “It’s truly a dream come true. It’s a great experience to sign with my fellow classmates and future teammate, Maninoa (Tufono),” Makaula said. “Signing […]

Punahou’s Tamatoa Falatea stands out at Poly Bowl

By Christian Shimabuku on January 20, 2019

Perhaps the Polynesian Bowl, a high school football all-star game that matches the best Hawaii has to offer with the rest of the nation’s top talent, was made for players like Punahou’s Tamatoa Falatea. Falatea was selected to the game due to his production on the field for the Buffanblu. In his senior season, he caught 74 passes for 1,057 yards and 11 touchdowns en route to Star-Advertiser All-State first team honors at wide receiver. Despite the numbers, Falatea says […]

Local boys appreciate Polynesian Bowl experience

By Christian Shimabuku on January 17, 2019

The Polynesian Bowl is thriving in Year 3, with the amount of four- and five-star prospects increasing each year. As a result, the uptick in national recruits has led to fewer slots for local players as the game becomes more prominent and exclusive. Tamatoa Falatea knows he’s part of a select few, but the Punahou senior has showed he can do more than just hang with elite competition. During live practice sessions at Aloha Stadium, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser All-State wide […]

Treven Ma’ae returns to Hawaii with plenty of memories

By Christian Shimabuku on January 16, 2019

Treven Ma’ae didn’t have much time to say goodbye. Once he got accepted to Bishop Gorman in January 2018, he had to move quickly to be able to make in time for the start of the new semester in Las Vegas. Ma’ae was a junior at Kapolei before deciding to take a leap of faith in joining one of the nation’s top prep football programs. Ma’ae’s cousin, who also attends Bishop Gorman, encouraged him to move up to Nevada during […]

Lahaina’s Sami Saribay camps out, then wins out at Officials

By Christian Shimabuku on December 22, 2018

Some of the best wrestlers are known to live in the gym. Such is the case for Sami Saribay and the rest of the Lahainaluna wrestling team, who slept overnight on wrestling mats in Leilehua’s Paul T. Kobayashi Gymnasium between the first and second days of the Hawaii Officials Tournament. Air mattresses and hung towels were visible behind the back exit, but the temporary arrangements didn’t deter Saribay, the defending girls state champion at 107. “There’s actually something wrong with […]
