Kaiser’s Kaile Halvorsen, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser All-State player of the year from this past season, was named the Gatorade Hawaii girls soccer state player of the year today.
Halvorsen is a finalist for the national Gatorade award which will be announced later this month.
The Santa Clara signee scored 31 goals and notched six hat tricks this season, leading the Cougars to the semifinals of the state tournament in Division I.
“Kaile made me make special adjustments because she is a dangerous playmaker for herself and her teammates,” Moanalua coach Nikki Dela Pena said in a press release. “She has great vision on where to be to create opportunities. I would often have to man-mark her, but her breakaway speed is very hard to defend.”
As a Gatorade player of the year, Halvorsen will be able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program.
Recent Gatorade Hawaii players of the year in girls soccer include Hawaii Prep’s Emi Higgins (2017), Pearl City’s Sunshine Fontes (2016), ‘Iolani’s Kristen Hori (2015) and Jill Shimabuku (2013), Kamehameha’s Kiani Halushka (2014), Carly Neal (2012), Caprice Dydasco (2011) and Mari Punzal (2007), Mililani’s Mari Miyashiro (2010), Punahou’s Jayann Gabrio (2009) and Kalani’s Tani Costa (2008).
