A marquee boys final between the top two seeds, ‘Iolani’s Phuc Huynh and Farrington’s Andre Ilagan, headlines the finals of the HMSA/HHSAA Tennis State Championships beginning tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. at Central Oahu Regional Park.
Huynh won the 2016 state title beating Ilagan in the finals. Ilagan came back to win the state title last year as the No. 1 seed after Huynh, the No. 2 seed, was upset in the semifinals.
Ilagan has dropped only six points in four matches to get to the finals after beating Mid-Pacific’s Reyn Miyagawa, the fifth seed, 6-2, 6-1 in today’s semifinals. Huynh, who has lost only nine games in four matches, knocked off No. 6 seed Gil Assi of Hilo 6-3, 6-1 in the semis.
The girls final is a rematch of the ILH final as Punahou teammates Alyssia Fossorier and Katreina Corpuz advanced their way through the bracket.
Corpuz is the defending state champion but is the No. 2 seed after losing to Fossorier in the ILH final, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Fossorier was the No. 2 seed and Corpuz the top seed in the ILH tournament.
Corpuz and Fossorier teamed up three years ago as freshmen to win a state doubles title.
No. 3 seed Tayvia Yamagata of Konawaena gave Fossorier a tough match in the semifinals, losing 7-5, 6-3. Corpuz won her semifinal match against No. 4 seed Maile Brilhante of Waiakea, 6-3, 6-3.
No. 4 seed Scott Yamamoto and Sean Yamamoto of ‘Iolani beat their teammates and the top-seeded team in boys doubles, Jordan Azuma and Joey Hu, 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the final. They will play another ‘Iolani pairing, second-seeded Robert Chang and Cody Ching, who won 6-4, 6-0 over Hunter Fujimori and Aidan Rooney of Mililani in the semifinals.
The girls doubles final will pit No. 4 seed Clarise Huang and Betsy Wo of Punahou against seventh-seeded Sabrina Loui and Gabriela Siaosi of ‘Iolani.
