For a second week in a row, the Campbell Sabers are the No. 1 team in the Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10.
Today’s balloting revealed status quo for the top four softball teams from last week’s poll, the first time all season those positions were static. Campbell (16-5-2, 9-3 OIA West) collected six of 11 first-place votes from the panel of coaches and media. Leilehua (12-4, 9-3) finished in a first-place tie with Campbell in the OIA West, but garnered just three first-place votes and remained at No. 2 in the Top 10.
Kapolei (18-9, 8-4) made it another All-OIA West top 3, outpointing Punahou for the third spot. While Campbell and Leilehua, as the top two teams in the West, have first-round byes in the upcoming league playoffs, Kapolei will host Farrington on Wednesday (3 p.m.) in one of four opening-round games. Punahou (15-6, 9-3 ILH) remains at No. 4. Roosevelt (13-1-1, 11-1 OIA East) nudged higher to No. 5
St. Francis, which went 9-3 in the ILH including two wins over Punahou, moved up one spot in the poll to No. 6. The Saints (10-5 overall) have the highest winning percentage against Top 10 opponents in the state. They are 7-3 against teams that have been ranked this season.
St. Francis will now play in the league’s Division II playoffs.
Rounding out the Top 10 are Maryknoll (12-7, 7-5 ILH), Pearl City (8-6-1, 7-5 OIA West), Kamehameha (12-7, 7-5 ILH) and newcomer Baldwin.
The Bears (14-3 overall) lead the MIL with a 12-0 record. They are also 0-3 against Top 10 competition (Leilehua, ‘Iolani, Lakeview).
Mililani (15-11, 5-7 OIA West) dropped out of the Top 10 following losses to Campbell and Leilehua.
Teams receiving votes are Kaiser, Waiakea, Mililani, Kealakehe, ‘Iolani, Kamehameha-Hawaii, Moanalua and Waianae.
