Mother Nature saves day for Punahou

Is Mother Nature cheering for Punahou?

Instead of facing a five-run deficit, a deluge of inclement weather may have saved the Buffanblu’s slim chance at winning the ILH’s baseball regular season.

A dry afternoon at Ala Wai Field turned into a torrent of rain, a power outage and lightning. ‘Iolani led 7-2 with Punahou at bat in the bottom of the second inning when umpires called for a rain delay. Within 10 minutes, wind howled to 25 mph, lights went out and lightning flashes began. In the darkness, fans who stocked the bleachers under cover huddled for warmth.

Then came the news that the game would be postponed. That was good for Punahou (9-3), which needs to run the table to catch first-place Mid-Pacific (12-3). The Owls’ loss to Saint Louis earlier today kept the door open for Punahou. ‘Iolani (9-3-1) saw its shot at first place stymied this week, but was happy to play the role of spoiler. The Raiders scored six runs in the top of the second inning, shortly before Mother Nature took over.

By rule, when the teams resume this game Thursday, the score should revert back to top 2nd, score 1-1.

“As a wise man once said, ‘sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. Sometimes it rains,’ ” Punahou coach Keenan Sue said, borrowing a quote from “Bull Durham”.

Here’s a look at the updated ILH baseball standings.

Thank you MPI AD Wagner for scheduling Mid Pac with 4 games in 5 days. Meanwhile, all the rest of the ILH schools are finishing out their schedules next week.

Mid Pacific has to wait on a loss from Punahou to lock up the 1st round title.

The only reason Punahou now has 3 games in a row is the rain out on Friday.
