Kamehameha’s Kysen Terukina, the No. 5 wrestler in Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound rankings, avenged a loss earlier this season in the quarterfinals of the state wrestling championships Wednesday at Blaisdell Arena.
At 120 pounds, Terukina pinned Baldwin freshman Kahilihiwa Joy to move on to the semifinals. At the Officials tournament in Decmeber, Joy pinned Terukina.
“My coaches always tell me it doesn’t matter who wins in the beginning,” Terukina said. “My older brother Shayden Terukina was a three-time state champion and he got pinned five times his freshman year and he came back and won it all. So it doesn’t matter.”
Asked if he wanted to gain weight to wrestle his brother, Zayren Terukina (No. 2 p4p), Kysen said, “I don’t think I would have to gain weight for that. Yeah I can (beat him). He knows. You can go ask him.”
Zayren Terukina, who wrestles for Campbell, is going for the 145-pound championship and his quarterfinal match is later today.
Both Kysen and Zayren have one state title under their belts already.
