Seabury Hall’s Veronica Winham is the Gatorade Hawaii girls cross country runner of the year for the second time in a row, the Gatorade Company announced recently.
The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the race course.
Winham, a 5-foot-5 senior, is a finalist for the national runner of the year award.
Winham won the state meet for the second straight year in the fall, in 19 minutes, 16.1 seconds. She won by 31.7 seconds and led the Spartans to the team title.
Winham is also a two-time Maui Interscholastic League cross country runner of the year and she finished the season undefeated. In addition, she was also the top Hawaii finisher at the Foot Locker West Regional Championships, placing 50th in 19:37.2.
Winham has volunteered locally with Best Buddies International and has donated her time as a youth track coach.
“Veronica was a stronger runner this year than last year,” said Jared Welch, the head coach of rival Maui High, in a press release. “That was due to the work she put in during the offseason, which was fueled by her competitive drive.”
Winham has maintained a weighted 3.73 grade-point average in the classroom and remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.
