Kaiser, Kalani win OIA swimming titles

Four individual and three relay records were set at the OIA swimming championships held Monday at the K. Mark Takai Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center.

Kalani snapped Roosevelt’s three-year streak of team titles on the boys side, claiming the Falcons’ first league championship in boys swimming.

Kaiser won its ninth consecutive girls league title and 16th overall.

The finals were postponed for two days after inclement weather on Saturday.

Roosevelt senior Joseph Ahia won three gold medals for the second year in a row and improved on two meet records he set in qualifying.

Ahia’s 21.02 seconds in the 50 freestyle broke his mark by 0.21 seconds, and he finished the 100 breaststroke in 56.77 seconds to surpass his qualifying time of 57.90. He also swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay team.

Kaiser junior Sophie Harrison had a hand in three league records, breaking the 100 butterfly mark (56.38). Harrison also swam on the winning 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams that broke league records.

Kaiser’s record breakers were all underclassmen — Harrison, Erin Patterson and Mari Yasumi are juniors, and Sofia Carlson is a freshman.

Kalani’s girls 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Shirley Li, Lina Namatame, Kate Fujii and Paulina Ruelas set the mark of 3:40.07, besting the previous fastest time by nearly two seconds.

Kalani senior DH Hwang won the 200 individual medley in 1:55.22 to set another record and finished with four gold medals.

The Cougars won seven of the 12 girls events, with Harrison claiming four gold medals.

The K. Mark Takai/HHSAA Swimming &Diving Championships will take place Feb. 9 and 10 on Maui.
