Saint Louis wide receiver Micah Matsuzaki led the way in 1988 as the offensive player of the year by both newspapers.
Matsuzaki scored 11 touchdowns in 1988, including three on punt returns.
The Honolulu Advertiser named Saint Louis linebacker Kendall Purcell as its defensive player of the year.
The Star-Bulletin came up with an interesting note on its All-Oahu team. Three players — defensive backs Sean Spencer of Kamehameha and Robert Pagan of Saint Louis, along with Kailua running back Byron Apuakehau — all lived on the same street (Haleaupuni St.) in Waimanalo.
Apuakehau was part of a talented running back class that also featured Saint Louis’ Tupu Alualu and Leilehua’s Adrian Murrell. Murrell rushed for 323 yards in a game against Waialua and 275 yards against Aiea.
Saint Louis’ Mike Nua was the quarterback chosen by both newspapers.

Mahalo Nui Loa…
WOW, 1988 season not 1 Kahuku player made All-State and not 1 made OIA East
Star-Bulletin All-Star either. CRAZY!!
???- sometimes it happens! Kahuku struggled in 88. Farrington and Kaimuki were loaded that year. Star-Bulletin was right with the selections. Mark Atuaia, Itula Mili were only sophomores for Kahuku. (Young team) 89 is when they had lots of All Stars.
Sorry! Just saw Fetty Mau LB for Kahuku made OIA first team east all star!
I know, that’s why I said star-Bulletin.
Just wondering why it’s crazy that nobody from Kahuku made it on the Star Bulletin? Maybe kids from Kaimuki and Farrington were just better then the kids from Kahuku that year! Again I’m just referring to that 88 football year! Ever since that year, Kahuku has had lots of kids on the allstars for both papers! They might have more then St. Louis.
Same reason it would be crazy if no one from
St Louis made it; they are football power houses
with an abundance of Talent. Just MHO!
My 1st year in Hawaii — great players, great memories!
Travis McKay wearing headband around his neck. Kalani quarterback Mark Manzo. Kaiser vs Kalani on live tv. Radford Rams Phil Cunningham. Good year
