The 1978 Prep Bowl saw Waianae quarterback Michael Beazley throw a touchdown pass on one of only two completed passes in the entire game to lead the Seariders to a 14-6 win over Kamehameha.
That wasn’t an indication of how voting for the All-State teams by both newspapers went, however.
Saint Louis’ Wayne Apuna was the player of the year from both newspapers and teammate Paul Goo, a quarterback, was the back of the year.
Apuna was dominant on both offense and defense. He set game, season and career records in the ILH for pass receptions. He even punted for the Crusaders, who brought a passing game to the high school football level that hadn’t been seen.
Goo ended his career holding the ILH record for passing TDs and passing yards in a career and also single-season records for completions, completion percentage, yardage and touchdowns.
The three running backs selected to the Advertiser first team were Kamehameha junior Boyd Yap, Punahou junior John Kamana and Waianae senior Fred Mahuka. The Star-Bulletin went with Yap, Mahuka and Kauai senior Rowland Souza. Kamana made the Star-Bulletin team as a flanker.
Kaiser’s Danny DeMello also made the first team as a pass catcher for both newspapers.
Kamehameha had three unanimous selections to both newspapers on defense: linebackers Richard Mello and Jordan Morey and defensive lineman Bruce Milles.
