Saint Louis won its fourth consecutive Prep Bowl in 1989 with its best team yet. The Crusaders, behind coach of the year Cal Lee, finished 16th in the country according to USA Today’s Super 25 rankings and extended their winning streak to a staggering 54 games.

Saint Louis linebacker Kalei Kaanoi was named the defensive player of the year, but it was the first time in three years Saint Louis did not sweep the top awards on both sides of the ball.

Kahuku junior running back Mark Atuaia was named the offensive player of the year.

Crusaders junior quarterback John Hao was named to the All-State first team along with running back Tupu Alualu. Hao was one of five underclassmen on the first team, joining Kahuku’s Itula Mili and Atuaia, ‘Iolani’s Ryan Hoopii and Crusaders offensive lineman Roy Maafala.

‘Iolani’s Paul Ah Yat beat out Hao on the Star-Bulletin’s All-Oahu team. The newspaper took one of the more iconic All-State photos with Lee surrounded by the 24 first-team selections aboard the Falls of Clyde at the Hawaii Maritime Center.
