The Honolulu Advertiser, which did an All-Oahu team in 1970 before going back to league all stars in 1971, put together its first All-State team in 1972.
Leilehua in the OIA West, Kahuku in the OIA East and ‘Iolani out of the ILH dominated the first team with four selections each.
Mules senior quarterback Alex Kaloi was named the back of the year while Raiders senior guard Tiloi Lolotai was the lineman of the year.
‘Iolani also had tackle Len Scanlan, center Dave Malama and back Guy Ching on the first team.
Yes three of the five best offensive lineman in the state went to ‘Iolani. The other two were Punahou’s Keith Uperesa and Kahuku’s Wayne Fonoimoana. Red Raiders defensive tackle Paul Nunu, receiver Pisa Finai and defensive back Paufai Finai also made the first team.
Kaloi was joined on the first team by Mules teammates Fialele Edra, Duff Phipps and Rick Wagner.
Punahou running back Mosi Tatupu won the Star-Bulletin’s ILH back of the year award for the second straight season as a junior.

I really enjoy reading the local allstar high schools of the past. The problem is, the printing is so small, I can’t even read their names, much less the sports article that comes with it.
