As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016.
Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here.
1979 was the year of Kaiser, which rolled Kamehameha in the Prep Bowl behind the offensive player of the year in the Honolulu Advertiser, Boyd Yap, and coach of the year Ron Lee.
The Honolulu Advertiser went with Waianae cornerback Max Maneafaiaga as the defensive player of the year while the Honolulu Star-Bulletin selected Yap as the back of the year and Pac-Five’s Leroy Lutu as the lineman of the year.
Yap was joined in an impressive backfield by Kamehameha’s Kaulana Park and Farrington’s Watson Tanuvasa.
The defense had its big share of names as well, led by Farrington’s Falaniko Noga and Waianae’s Fred Toilolo on the defensive line and defensive back Richard Miano of Kaiser.

people who like to complain about Ron Lee recruiting, Boyd Yap was his best poach. Because of coach Chai’s politics with the Park brothers Boyd was on the out. And coach Lee had to find a replacement for monster back Derek Kaneshiro. But i don’t care, like i said all schools do it. I played pop warner football a particular all star lineman as a kid and coaches from all over the state talked to him about “aunties” and “uncles”, but good for him he stayed in his district. A particular OL all star we also played with “transferred” to the eastside, from Liliha area, to live with “aunties” and “uncles”. Ahh good memories.
That’s the year Randall Saito killed Sandra Yamashiro in a parking lot in Ala Moana Shopping center. Saw the clip. He was 21 years old, you guys just made 17 years old. He was from the 75′ class somewhere.

Boyd Yap was amazing to watch, that dude could run sideways like nobody. Incredibly hard to tackle. Great times ya..(and I ran track for Kaiser).
