As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016.
Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here.
Farrington’s William Apisa and Roosevelt’s Peter Haliniak took home the top City honors from the Star-Bulletin with Kamehameha’s Cal Chai named the coach of the year.
The Rural All-Star team in the Star-Bulletin was led by Radford’s Mel Saunders and Waianae’s John Kawaa.

Do you know that Peter Haliniak has a son coaching football at St. Francis, grandson Milton is the center. His daughter Heidi started Punchbowl Basketball Club, granddaughter also coaches boys volleyball at St Francis, son Hunter continues to play and lives in Hollywood and daughter Hoku is an athletic director for Pahoa high school. Thank you for sharing this awesome memory!!

In May 1962, I was the Mckinley high school drill team commander. The Advertiser came and took my picture and it was printed in May 1962. I sure would like to get a copy of that page.
In 1962 the Wheeler (AFB) Packers, midget football team, was undefeated and champions. Coach Gibbons and staff led the 7 to 11 year olds to undefeated season with opponents unable to score – except one team scored 6 points, the only TD that season against the Packers.
