2002 prep football all-star teams

As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016.

Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here.

2002 was the year Bobby George, in his final chance at Saint Louis, brought home a state championship under head coach Delbert Tengan, the first since Cal Lee had left to take a year off before coaching for the Hawaiian Islanders and eventually at the University of Hawaii.

George got plenty of help on offense from running back B.J. Batts, who was one of only two underclassmen on offense to make the Star-Bulletin All-State first team.

George and Wilson Afoa were the top players on offense and defense in both newspapers.

Castle linebacker Blaze Soares was the only sophomore selected to the Honolulu Advertiser first team. Soares and Knights coach Nelson Maeda helped take Castle all the way to the state final before losing to Saint Louis.
