As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016.
Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here.
1998 was the last year of the Prep Bowl and the winner was the same as it ever was with Saint Louis continuing its dominance. The talent stacks up with any year before or since, with Timmy Chang, Joe Igber and Gerald Welch wrapping up their careers. Looking back, the biggest controversy might be the Advertiser making Farrington offensive lineman Vince Manuwai honorable mention while the Star-Bulletin put him on the first team.
The Advertiser had the advantage of naming a Super 25 while the Star-Bulletin limited itself to the traditional 11 and 11 but curiously only selected four offensive linemen.

Vince Manuwai went to Farrington not Saint Lulu. Get it right
Was pretty awesome that both St Louis and Big Red were nationally ranked by USA today at the time.
RRFL!
Remember Welch a recruit that lived up the street from the Kahuku field. When the lights at Weimer field went on, it reflected in their house. George Ornella’s another one that got away. Also Tommy boy Heffernan. Lol Tommy was a qb at Kahuku, went to StL. but “they” had their qb,so Tommy went defensive back and beat out everybody by being name Back of the Year. Lol. Kahuku represent.
LOL ILH agenda runs so deep that Saint Lulu is STILL trying to recruit Vince Manuwai. RRFL!
Awesome reprint Jerry!
That 1998 Kahuku offensive line was HUGE!! Talamoni and Manumaleuna was tough to stop, probaly one of Kahuku best tandems.
