Saint Louis breaks into national rankings

Saint Louis has been ranked No. 1 all season by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, but until last week’s loss to Bingham (Utah), No. 2 Kahuku had been the team from Hawaii ranked in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25.

After a sound 49-13 thrashing of Punahou on Saturday night at Aloha Stadiun, the Crusaders are finally getting their deserved recognition nationally. Saint Louis has broken into the MaxPreps national rankings and is No. 24 this week as the only new team to enter the top 25.

Saint Louis (4-0, 2-0 ILH D-I) has outscored its first four opponents 203-20 and has now won nine consecutive games dating back to last season. The Crusaders are ranked one spot ahead of De La Salle (Calif.), which lost to Bishop Gorman (Nev.) over the weekend.

Bingham, which shut out Kahuku 17-0 in Las Vegas earlier this month, jumped up three spots to No. 11. Mater Dei (Calif.) is ranked No. 1, followed by Florida schools IMG Academy and St. Thomas Aquinas.

Saint Louis will test itself Saturday at Aloha Stadium against Narbonne (Calif.), which is 2-2 this season. Narbonne owns a 17-14 win over Serra (Calif.), which lost 56-42 to Punahou earlier this month. Narbonne lost a close game to Long Beach Poly (Calif.), 14-10, and was blown out on Friday by Centennial (Calif.) 52-6.

Centennial is ranked No. 8 by MaxPreps.

For all this talk about how great Kahuku Football is and how many kids play football, there is only 1 current NFL player who graduated from Kahuku. Assuming the Star Advertiser is accurate it reports that, “KAHUKU – Hau’oli Kikaha, Saints linebacker — Recorded one tackle, including a sack for a loss of 7 yards, while also getting credit for a quarterback hurry in a loss to the Patriots.”

So basically with all the kids who play football at a school with a low history of academics, there is only one kid over the past 15 years who has turned it into a career.

I forget which Kahuku supporter wrote it (it was probably anywaaays and his multiple usernames). But he was listing all these numbers about how many NFL players Kahuku produces. Well 1 out of thousands doesn’t support your claim.

So now you can see why it’s a smart move to leave this area for greener pastures. Not too many kids play in the NFL, but at least if you leave Kahuku, you might have a chance at a quality education.

Congrats St LuLu – well deserved. Glad Hawaii is repped.

Hyn – I just posted on the other articles – didn’t have a chance to follow game – too busy this weekend.

But I owe you plate lunch! St LuLu came to play and Puns stayed home and didn’t participate.

Lemme know where, what and when and I’ll call it in…under “Hawaiian”…?

    Shoots.

    RRFL.

Rankings don’t mean much…but I’m always prideful when any team from Hawaii is recognized nationally in any sport….Congrats CRUSADER NATION!

  5. "UNITY=STRENGTH " September 18, 2017 9:58 am

Bigger picture it doesn’t matter who wins in Hawaii and comes on top it’s only natural but it makes our local teams more competitive and better pushing them to new highs so if when we take on these mainland teams we can represent and take pride which we most certainly do (I DO!!!:)) and also it opens the doors if not more for our local athletes. The day will some day probably come when some of our teams will make it and be ranked in the top ten nationally but until then they will need our feedback and support!!!

  6. Education First September 18, 2017 10:19 am

@ Unity-Strength. I honestly believe we will see a drastic drop in the amount of kids playing football over the next 10 year around Hawaii. Long term health risks aren’t worth it for middle and upper class families and their children.

On a side note, did anyone hear what has been going on at Kaiser? My nephew graduated from Kaiser last year, but their family is still involved in Kaiser affairs.

It is absolutely crazy what is going on there with Coach Martinez and some parents.

  9. Coach C September 18, 2017 11:47 am

Can we give accolades to the St.Louis team instead of turning it into a bash Kahuku thing? Sshh. Let’s give our support to ALL our student athletes. Congrats to St.Louis. Good luck.

  10. TooMeke September 18, 2017 11:52 am

Edu First – I tend to agree with your assessment of future trends…only because the private schools ARE recruiting the poly’s for their sports teams.

Those poly’s at ILH schools get a taste of what it’s like when sports is NOT the primary driver of that school’s focus. I know every year that several non-poly kids at ILH schools turn down scholarships to lower schools because they’ve already been accepted to the “Ivy league” schools of this world. They’re not going to turn down the Harvard’s for the New Mexico State’s just because its a free ride.

And the poly’s at those schools are exposed to the mentality. They go on to college and get educated. And let their kids decide their own destinies. It’s not all “father to son” anymore… So yes…we should see less interest in sports in general…but maybe not for a couple of decades.

My kids don’t play sports at all…too much homework every night…including weekends. If they want to that’s up to them. I’ll support them and make them fulfill their commitments, but I’m not forcing my dreams on them.

    And oh yeah… RRFL. 😀

If you look at numbers (ESPN Outside the Line) ran a story when the movie Concussion came out a few years ago. The amount of kids playing football across the US continue to drop over the past 5 years.

If you look at Oahu, just look at the private schools where most of their student population come from middle and upper class families.

Punahou and Iolani’s numbers are dwindling at an astronomical pace. Punahou’s JV team is down to 29 students on the team. And their intermediate numbers are similar.

If you target the areas such as Kalani and Kaiser, where the average median income is noticeably higher than the state median, their numbers are down too.

If it isn’t due to the CTE scare, what do you attribute to the declining numbers at many private schools and public schools that have many affluent kids?

It’s no coincidence that sports like cross country, golf, and air riflery are getting more participants at these same schools.

If you take a vote on this site, t will be inaccurate. You would be targeting a pool that comes onto a football forum. Your results would be skewed.

But if you took a pool over the entire state randomly and targeting 75,000 people (assuming they all agree to participate), I am quite confident that you would see a high amount of adults choosing not to allow their children to play football due to the risk of future brain damage.

  13. Awrite!! September 18, 2017 12:27 pm

Would love to see a Hawaii team be in the top ten nationally, Kahuku was my first hope for national aspirations but obviously the past two years we cannot match the recruiting power of the BGs and Binghams of this world. pretty much all the teams in the top10 or even top25 recruit top talent outside their areas to replenish the roster.

Kahuku is missing the ability to develop and breed skilled players (QB,WR) and that is why the passing game will never be good out here. What is working out in STLs favor is that all kids on Oahu that are serious about football aspire to play for STL or PUN, both super teams. Case in point, jordan iosefa from Waipahu who felt he was wasting his talent and exposure at Waipahu so transfered to STL and instantly increased his stock because he was on the #1 team in the state. There are many kids that do this.

I can quarantee you that if the pickings were slim STL would not have let Toilolo leave with the excuse that “we cant offer you a scholarship”. STL has many kids ready and lined up to step-up so yeah, they wont care if you leave IF the next man up is just as good. Kids from Kahuku return from STL with that experience of football success and possibly a college offer only to find out that they are just another # helping other kids get better.

  14. Awrite!! September 18, 2017 12:36 pm

“high amount of adults choosing not to allow their children to play football due to the risk of future brain damage.”
    ——————————–

That seems to be the current understanding, BUT, with the constant changing of the rules preventing Katooshes and the growing implementation of passing offenses I bet in 5yrs we would be seeing more of a flagfootball type game rather then the ole smashmouth gladiator warrior game. In this case parents would not mind their boys playing football.

On espn they were saying something like not allowing full contact in youth leagues until they were in the 8th grade and then the NFL pros exiting the game earlier lets say at age 29 instead of 33. This shortens the amount of exposure a kid bangs his body up.

  15. Education First September 18, 2017 1:15 pm

In the ILH, academics and GPAs take precedence over fleeting athletic glory. That’s why Kahuku has a horrible academic reputation and poor test scores. Misplaced priorities. RRFL = Remedial Reading For Life.

KAHUKU HAS ONLY ONE FORMER PLAYER ON A CURRENT NFL ROSTER. LOL!!!! Think about that for one moment.

I never played HS sports but I think it benefited me because I had more time to study which in turn helps you more later in life than playing football ever will. I kept active with hip hop dancing and entering talent contests. Brown bags, school, etc. I’m CTE free!! I signed up as a HS football ref but had to drop out because I couldn’t catch a ride to meetings and I would get winded during field training. Still enjoy watching games though. Mom (aka my personal Uber) enjoys them too. The Midas colored dots race on the Aloha Stadium scoreboard is always great fun.

  16. Education First September 18, 2017 1:24 pm

To clarify, I’m not saying there’s a difference in intellect between public vs private school players from Oahu’s North Shore. It’s just that at Punahou these mercenaries who are brought in for the sole purpose of playing sports are taken care of very nicely (i.e. diversity” scholarships, classes and tutors for the sole sake of keeping athletes eligible, housing near campus for a select few by boosters, etc). I know many alumni and parents of “legit” students are upset at the admissions process and the enrollment slots taken away from disadvantaged students who aren’t athletes but that’s the way to go if you want to be football kings. I never played HS sports because of my asthma but I have no complaints. DISCLAIMER: I went to Punahou summer school session once but wasn’t a student there.

You guys are right enough of the kahuku bashing…but they kind of put themselves in that position when everything ends with RR4L. Maybe if there was less of that, and more love for schools like St. Louis and punahou and no more crap about recruiting(because I played for St. Louis and there’s no recruiting going on and I can attest to that), then maybe we all would get along

This is a sports thread, not academic one. We are on here to read and chat sports, not to hear about test scores. Thank you very much.

  24. Nae S September 18, 2017 6:01 pm

Dafun– Kahuku gets the same flack for “recruiting”, as if they have anything to offer athletes. Funding for athletics is consistently below par; can barely afford to keep the football field in decent condition, let alone offer athletes any kind of incentive to play. Are the coaches paying the boys out of pocket or something? Doubt it.

What do you mean by “they kind of put themselves in that position when everything ends with RR4L”? We put ourselves in a position to be mocked by other schools because we have a loyal fan base? Because we are still proud to represent Kahuku, even after a loss? Who said Kahuku’s fan base doesn’t support other schools? There are large numbers of North Shore students attending St Louis, Punahou, Kamehameha, some of whom I know personally. We’re happy to support and congratulate any Hawaii team that makes it to the national stage. It’s just too bad other schools’ fans don’t seem to be willing to do the same for Kahuku, unless we’re winning.

Enemy of the State, indeed. But we’re used to it.

You obviously are just spitting nonsense.

Like I said, the participation isn’t affecting lower income areas. The schools you list other than Mililani are lower income areas. Check simple facts from the Hawaii Census. Do you even know how to do that?

You talk all big but you can’t even do something simple like check a database for info. Then again if you are a moron, I get why you are angry.

But don’t take out your anger and frustration on me since you are poorly educated. Go and be angry at your parents. They are the real culprits here.

Here is some info (assuming it’s accurate) – http://www.jobmonkey.com/uniquejobs/stuntman/

“Stuntmen average $70,000 per year.” Now I am not saying this is what he makes. But unless you can show me otherwise, making $70,000 isn’t that much, especially if he’s living in Hollywood.

And your point is? That one person can make barely above the median yearly salary for that area?

you guys are just plain dumb to even still believe the kids are recruited. Why the hell do you think a lot of these kids are tiny and not as big as other teams that they’ve played? It’s obvious the school doesn’t recruit. you must be living in the 90’s at this point. Plus what do you guys know? I’ve never heard any of the coaches saying we recruit. And here we go once we start winning again it goes back to the “of course st louis recruits” crap. I just hope my crusaders play your red raiders and do what we did last year and make a mockery of you guys in the finals

  40. Education First September 19, 2017 5:05 pm

Do you notice @dafun, that many people say so many schools recruit. But when they are asked to name which players are recruited, they never can come back with any specific names.

Spending your entire paycheck on kahuku stuff? Wow…

  43. Dafun September 20, 2017 8:46 pm

And this forum is getting worse and worse everyone talking about money and education. This is about us(st. Louis) against you guys that dominate this entire website(kahuku). We have a rivalry and it’s all about bragging rights. I don’t like to go to work and hear my coworkers talk to me about kahuku beating St. Louis. This is business. Not personal. Strictly business and that’s why we should get back on track about football. But I need you guys to come to an understanding that Your qb can only run. No he cannot throw like other QB’s in the state and that’s all he has going for them and the fact that your coach is transitioning you guys to a pass team as well is going to be your downfall

  44. Alpha September 20, 2017 9:29 pm

Well Punahou didn’t live up to my expectations this past weekend. Maybe theyll make adjustments for the rematch, but STL looks to be the clear favorite. Kahuku doesn’t look as strong as the past 2yrs, Mililani looks to give them a strong challenge in the oia unless Kapolei wakes up and notice how talented their team is.
