Barcoma takes over as Maui baseball coach

Maui's Haoa Jarnesky tagged out Campbell's Markus Ramos to end a rundown on the third-base line during a state Division I semifinal game in May. The Sabers, who hired Leonard Barcoma Jr. as their new head coach, went on to win the D-I state title. Bruce Asato / Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Leonard Barcoma Jr. will take over as head coach of the state champion Maui High baseball team, Sabers athletic director Michael Ban announced Wednesday.

Barcoma has coached in more than 20 seasons in the Maui Interscholastic League — at Maui High and at Kamehameha-Maui. He was Maui’s JV head coach last season.

“Coach Barcoma is a dedicated individual who is committed to teaching the game of baseball and instilling common core values such as discipline, hard work and sportsmanship,” Ban said in a news release. “Currently, coach
Barcoma is finalizing his staff and preparing for the upcoming season. He is a person with great integrity and we are excited about the upcoming season. The Maui High School baseball program has a proud tradition and we are confident that he will provide a positive experience for our athletes.”

Under head coach Chase Corniel, the Sabers captured the Division I state title last spring with a 6-1 victory over Waiakea in an all-Neighbor Islands final at Les Murakami Stadium. It was Maui’s second state crown and first since 1982.
