Only St. Thomas Aquinas, a Florida school, placed higher than Punahou in the final MaxPreps Cup standings for 2016-17.
The national standings are determined by awarding points for schools that win a state title or finish second in high school sports. Different types of sports and varying size classifications can also affect the standings.
Punahou won state championships in 11 sports — girls air riflery, girls cross country, boys paddling, boys soccer, boys swimming and diving, girls swimming and diving, girls golf, girls tennis, boys track and field, boys volleyball and girls water polo.
The Buffanblu also placed second in six sports — boys cross country, boys basketball, mixed paddling, girls soccer, boys golf and boys tennis.
In addition, Punahou’s boys volleyball team finished with a No. 4 national ranking.
