Castle is experiencing problems with the lights at its football field and will be playing all 2017 league games on the road against the regularly scheduled opponents.
John Hao told Hawaii Prep World on Sunday about the situation.
“Our lights don’t light up the field enough,” he said. “And the light housings are all rusted. It’s a safety issue.”
The Knights will still play a nonleague game against Damien at home this Saturday at 3 p.m., when no lights are needed.
Castle’s games that were originally supposed to be at home and will now be on the road are against Mililani on Aug. 26, Leilehua on Sept. 8, and Kailua on Sept. 15.
A call to Castle athletic director Laynie Sueyasu for comment Monday morning was not immediately returned.
Waialua will not be playing any home games this year as well, due to newly planted grass that needs more time to fully root. Two games that were originally supposed to be at home were changed to the road in the most recent OIA schedule. The Bulldogs will now be at Leilehua on Sept. 15 for a game against McKinley, and at Leilehua again on Oct. 6 for a game against Roosevelt.
Another Waialua home game was switched to a neutral site earlier in July — against Kaimuki on Aug. 12. That game will be played at Farrington’s new Skippa Diaz Stadium, and the change was made with the knowledge that the Bulldogs’ field was definitely not going to be ready yet.
As a Castle parent, I think it’s ridiculous that the problem was not taken cared of at the end of last season. How does a team play their Homecoming and have their Senior Night at the opponents field? Why can’t the Friday games be moved to Saturday games so that Castle can play at their own field where lights won’t be needed?
you know…cuz da housings went rust only dis past summer. unreal.
and Waialua had how many months to make sure grass was ready? grass only takes 6-8 weeks to grow…even less in da ‘tropics’.
ainocan how the lack of planning by da adults are gonna hurt da kids. fired.
Call Sen. Tokuda who represents that district and also grad from Castle. Only one problem, she might be too busy running for LG
