It’s not unusual for a North Shore boy to get a full-ride scholarship offer.
What is unusual is that the player plays for a school at the northwestern tip of Oahu and not the northeastern.
Yes, defensive tackle Matthan Hatchie of the Waialua Bulldogs received the offer from the University of Hawaii recently. Most often, football scholarship offers to North Shore boys go to players who play at Kahuku.
Hatchie was a big part of the Bulldogs’ run to the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II football championship a year ago. Waialua defeated Waipahu 36-35 for the school’s first football title since 1955.
Hatchie announced the offer on social media, and the offer was confirmed by Bulldogs coach Lincoln Barit and athletic director Bryce Kaneshiro.
“Matthan is a great kid,” Kaneshiro said. “He’s one of those athletes that you want on your team. He is a soft-spoken giant. He’s a competitor and the kind of kid who all the kids like and follow.”
Hatchie is the brother of Micah Hatchie, a former Waialua standout who played guard for the University of Washington and was briefly on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ roster. Matthan is also the son of Waialua assistant George Hatchie. Micah Hatchie is also an assistant for the Bulldogs this year.
Hatchie, who is 6 feet 3 and 250 pounds, is preparing for his senior high school season. Waialua scrimmages at Radford at 5 p.m. on Friday and open the season with a nonleague game at Waiakea on the Big Island on Aug. 5.
