The last three years have featured some of the most dominant girls wrestling squads of all time, could Lahainaluna raise the bar even higher on Saturday?
The Lunas got seven of their nine wrestlers into the semifinals on Friday, leaving them alive for seven titles. That would be more than any school ever.
And ever only goes back three years.
Kamehameha got five champions last year, Lahainaluna did it the year before and the Warriors did it in 2014.
Lahainaluna’s title hopefuls this year are Ira Navarro (97), Iverly Navarro (107), Alexis Encinas (112), Nanea Estrella (117), Taylor Pelegrino-Hayase (132), Kauanoe Keahi (138) and Shannon Jaramillo (145). Sami Saribay (102), Ashley Taguiam (122) and Ailani Lanoza (168) are all earning points for the Lunas on the back side.
All of that is getting ahead of things, though. The Lunas lead the team standings with 88 points, with Kamehameha at 72 and Pearl City with 60. Two Kamehameha girls, Ashley Gooman and Zion-Grace Vierra, stand in the way of Lahainaluna state championships.
Kamehameha has five girls still alive for state crowns.
Below is how the top three teams stand, red denotes still alive for a state title.
For (recent) history buffs, the teams with the most state titles in a single tournament are:
2016 Kamehameha: Ashley Gooman (102), Donavyn Futa (117), Teshya Alo (132), Pomaikai Yamaguchi (138) and Leilani Cmargo-Naone (184).
2015 Lahainaluna: Alexis Encinas (107), Diamond Freitas (112), Breanna Dudoit-Vasquez (138), Carly Jaramillo (145) and Lalelei Mataafa (225).
2014 Kamehameha: Donavyn Futa (113), Shana Dilliner (117), Harmony Pacheco (121), Teshya Alo (130) and Erin Scheidt (175).
