Notes: The danger of doing these notes based on state medals is a freshman like Terukina is discounted but the top seed is the real deal. He will not meet an opponent with a state medal until the final, his side is devoid of them. The other side contains Obra-Nakata, who reached the state final at 106 last year, but Terukina has handled him all season in the ILH. Pagurayan has been in this class for three years, taking fourth in 2015 and third last year.

Punahou coach Yoshi Honda: “Sad it happened that way. It was a half-nelson that came up over the hip and then he landed on his head. Casen has a concussion and he’s going to the hospital. It’s sad because he’s out and Pagurayan (due to the disqualification) doesn’t get to go on either. No one wins there. We’re hoping Casen is going to be OK.”

Gillcoat is in the other side of the bracket, finishing sixth last year, but defending state champ Garcia is sitting in the second seed.

Notes: Estrella reached the state final last year after taking third the year before, getting the top seed was big for him because his only challenge seems to be Stefanelli, who was fourth at 120 last year, on his side of the bracket. Nardi is a medalist on the other side in what might be the toughest quad in the tournament. He finished sixth at 126 last year but draws Nishigaya, who was fourth at 106 last year, in the first round. The second round doesn’t get any easier, with 2015 state champion and two-time finalist Santos looming as the second seed.

Notes: Terukina is the top seed and finished third at 126 last year. He is the only medalist in his quad but Watase looms as he goes for his fourth state medal. He finished fifth last year after placing fourth the previous two years at 106 pounds. Tavares is a threat on the other side, finishing fifth at 120 last year, nobody else on his side of the bracket has a state medal including ILH champion Perez. Diamond has a tough road if he wants to give his family its sixth straight year with a state placer.

Notes: Fong is going for his third state medal and first title after finishing fourth last year and reaching the state final against Shandon Ilaban Totten in 2015. Manley looms for Fong in the second round, he finished fourth at 126 last year behind only Zayren Terukina, Keliinoi and Cameron Kato. Ruiz is on the other side of the bracket and is as tough as they come, going for his fourth state medal. He was third the last two years and fourth as a freshman. Keliinoi vs. Ruiz is a definite possibility in the semifinals, the Searider reached the state final at 126 last year and is going for his third medal after taking sixth at 120 the year before.

Notes: Makoa is trying to become the fifth Cooper to earn a state medal, and his route is clear as there are no other state medalists on his side of the bracket. Angelo finished fifth at 132 last year in a stacked bracket that included Blaysen Terukina, Shandon Ilaban-Totten, Antonio Ruiz and Joseph Fong. The only other wreslter with state medalist experience on Angelo’s side of the bracket is Madison Leanio of Kauai, who finished fifth last year at 152.

Notes: Burgos has been dominant all year after finishing fourth at states last year and looking to become Aiea’s first state champ since Frank Pascua in 1990. The only other wrestler in the bracket with a state medal is second seed Takenaka, who was the surprise of the 2015 tournament with a run to the state final against Chance Ikei but couldn’t turn that momentum into a pacement last year.

Notes: Pascua is one of the state’s best, finishing second to Liam Corbett at 152 last year and winning his first title at 145 the year before. He is also looking to compete in his fourth state final, losing to Braydon Akeo in 2014. Pascua would be Iolani’s first 170-pound champ since Robert Yamashita in 2002 and is the only boy on his side of the bracket with a medal to his credit, much less three. The only other guy in the bracket with a state medal is second seeded Kikuyama, who was fifth at 160 last year.
