Darren Johnson will be the new football coach at Campbell, he confirmed Friday afternoon.
Johnson was expected to be announced as the coach today on campus, when he will meet with the Sabers players.
Johnson, who grew up on the North Shore and still lives in Punaluu, is looking forward to the new challenge, the source said. He is a former Kailua head coach and an assistant at Kahuku and Kapolei.
A source added that Johnson is looking at this as a last go ’round of sorts as a head coach.
He most recently was a coach for the Laie Red Raiders of the Big Boyz program.
Johnson takes over the post from Amosa Amosa, who was not re-signed after last season.
Johnson’s son, Kawehena Johnson, is a former defensive player of the year for Kahuku as a defensive back.

Dang! If anyone can elevate a program, DJ is the guy; nothing against Amosa though.
Good luck DJ…except when Campbell plays Big REd! lol
If only he had waited just one more day to take the new Kahuku Football Head Coach vacancy lol
Campbell should’ve did their research better on Darren Johnson.
Darren Johnson also coached Kaimuki and actually got them into the state semifinal round one year. This guy has won big everywhere he has been. When he was at Kailua, his teams were top in the state. I remember when he was the starting QB at Kahuku early 1980s.
Wow, DJ will elevate this program for sure! Congrats!
In his early years at Kailua he had the benefit of having several kahuku kids. He had Rocky alo and Keone Brown for a couple years. He’d probably still be there if for off the field issues.
Make sure to keep team moms & faculty confined.
@heatless… right? Lol.
Why, you two going make a move on the team fathers? You two killing me right now.
