Social media has been an integral part of an athlete’s college recruitment for some time now, but Kailua senior and Washington State commit Christian Mejia took a more old-fashioned approach by avoiding it altogether.
“I’m quiet about that. I’m not a social media guy, I’m just laid back,” he said after making his commitment to WSU official. “Just me and my family kind.”
After offers from Vanderbilt, Hawaii and Washington State, Mejia was down to the Rainbow Warriors and Cougars. Ultimately, it came down to the allure of a Pac-12 school and the opportunity to experience the mainland.
“It was a nice place. Good people up there, and they were very supportive,” Mejia said. “Being up there and going away will make me become a better person.”
Mejia, who is 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, will line up at defensive end for Wazzu, where he plans to study psychology.
Putting pen to paper is certainly a relief for the soft-spoken Mejia, who is also a star on the Surfrider basketball team.
“It feels amazing,” Mejia said. “I stressed a lot during the process but signing today felt really good and I can focus and finish up high school.”
Mejia will join a Washington State program that already is home to defensive linemen Hercules Mata’afa (Lahainaluna) and Kingston Fernandez (Kapolei), walk-on receiver Kainoa Wilson (Mililani) and offensive lineman Nilsson Gaisoa, who redshirted this season. Gaisoa and Mejia were teammates at Kailua in 2015.
