The Hawaii Wrestling Officials Association scholarship tournament begins on Friday at Leilehua, and the boys 120 bracket is stacked.
That bracket is topped by two-time state champion Corey Cabanban of Saint Louis, who will be going for his second straight Officials title. he will be opposed by No. 2 seed Logan Garcia of Moanalua, No. 3 Triston Santos of Campbell and No. 6 Jayson Pagurayan of Kapolei.
Cabanban, Garcia and Santos have all won state titles but Pagurayan will be going for his third Officials title in four years. Cabanban has Leilehua’s Isaac Stalcup and Kawehi Gillcoat of Lahinaluna on his side of the bracket while the other side contains Garcia, Santos, Pagurayan and Mililani’s Casey Nitta, who beat Garcia for the MIT title last week.
Other boys going for multiple Officials titles are KJ Pascua of Iolani and Micah Tynanes of Campbell.
The 138-pound bracket also looks tough, with Waianae’s Keale Keliinoi seeded first ahead of Caele Manley of Molokai and Pac-Five’s Joseph Fong.
The girls side includes eight state champions, with the biggest battles expected at the lighter weights. Lahainaluna’s Iverly Navarro and Bailey Hoshino of Punahou are on opposite sides of the bracket at 107 pounds and Kamehameha’s Ashley Gooman and Alexis Encinas are seeded 1-2 at 112 pounds.
Other state champions entered are Radford’s Angela Peralta, Teniya Alo of Kahuku, Kelani Corbett of Leilehua and Roosevelt’s Macy Higa.
Peralta will be going for her third Officials title, which would match Teshya Alo from two years ago as the last to do so.
