GAME NIGHT 10/7: St. Francis/Pac-Five

It should be a fun weekend of football as the OIA Division I playoffs begin while the ILH regular season ends and the OIA D-II playoff race gets sorted out.

St. Francis (3-2, 2-1) needs a win over Pac-Five (2-3, 0-3) in the first game of an ILH doubleheader at Aloha Stadium to finish the regular season tied with Damien in the ILH Division II race. Don’t count out the Wolfpack, however. Pac-Five lost in triple-overtime to Damien, 50-49 last week, and lost by just a field goal to St. Francis, 30-27, in the first meeting. Pac-Five is right there knocking at the door. Can it finally break through?


HISTORY: Pac-Five leads the all-time series 3-2 but St. Francis has won the last two meetings.

St. Francis loses the card draw after the game after finishing in a first-place tie with Damien. Saints will rematch the Wolfpack on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Aloha Stadium.

FOURTH QUARTER

Smotherman runs 15 yards on a naked boot leg late in the game but comes up hobbled a little bit. Akana back into the game with 2:35 remaining. Matthew Dacuycuy adds a 5-yard TD run. Saints close to 400 yards rushing.

Ihu continues his huge game for the Wolfpack with a 53-yard return on the kickoff to the St. Francis 28. Backup QB Tyler Fukuroda hits Robert Walker Jr. for 27 yards to the 1 and AJ Ulufale scores on a 1-yard TD run.

Foki Kailea with a 61-yard TD run showing off some speed on first play of St. Francis’ next drive. This is a blowout.

Otuvaka adds a sack to his game resume as backup QB Tyler Fukuroda in for Pac-Five. Three-and-out.

Saints ended the third quarter with 212 rushing yards and are pouring it on. Shimabukuro rips off a 45-yard run to give him 134 yards on the ground. Jake Smotherman throws his first TD pass of the season, a 5-yarder to Tevita Otuvaka. 32-6, 9:39.

THIRD QUARTER

Wolfpack back at it from their 35. Saints force a three-and-out.

Pac-Five tries an onsides kick and instead Sefa Finau picks it up and he’s GONE. 52-yard kickoff return for a TD. 25-6.

RB AJ Ulufale with a 5-yard reception on third-and-5 and then a 12-yard run to the Saints’ 18-yard line. Ihu snags his sixth reception of the game for a 15-yard gain to the 3. A bad snap on the next play however and it goes all the way back to the 24. Next play and Pac-Five is ON THE BOARD. Ryan Johnson to Grey Ihu, 24-yard TD pass. Ihu 7 receptions, 117 yards.

Saints start on their 16 after a good Pac-Five punt. A holding call negates a 23-yard run by Matt Dacuycuy and instead it’s a three-and-out.


Johnson completes all three passes but the last one to Ihu is stopped for a loss of 2 and Pac-Five is three-and-out.

St. Francis gets the ball first and will start from its 41. Second tackle for loss for Evan Ramirez. Fourth-and-2 from the 39 and Tyson Shimabukuro is GONE. 39-yard TD run caps first drive of second half. 18-0, 9:44.

SECOND QUARTER

Pac-Five gets a good return out to the 44 with 10 seconds left. Johnson rolls out to his left and throws one downfield but gets clobbered by Vanisi coming full speed. Flag is thrown and Vanisi called for a personal-foul call. No time on the clock for a play from the 41. HALF. St. Francis called for eight personal foul penalties in the first half.

Micah Kalei with a 32-yard return on a good punt to the Pac-Five 42 but is hit hard and low near the sideline. Pac-Five’s Daven Pila called for a late hit and St. Francis is called for unsportsmanlike conduct from the bench. Ball stays at the 42 with 44 seconds remaining. Deep ball is on the money to Kalei, who is back in the game. He dives forward and makes the catch at the Wolfpack 11. Timeout St. Francis with 28 seconds left. After a false-start penalty, Bubba Akana hits Ezra Inayoshi-Dudoit for a 16-yard TD pass with 19 seconds left in the half. Two-point pass is no good. 12-0.

Pac-Five gets ball on its 11 with 2:07 remaining. Pila with a 7-yard reception but tack on 15 on the face-mask penalty. Saints with a ton of penalty yards in this first half. Supilani Mailei with another tackle for loss and Pac-Five is three-and-out. Punt coming with 1:03 remaining.

Saints will start on their 24. A defensive pass interference moves the ball up to the 39 of St. Francis with 5:15 remaining in the half. Akana hits Scott McLeod for 9 yards. Saints try a play-action pass but Akana is hurried out of the pocket. He scrambles and makes two guys miss and picks up a first down on 11-yard run but a late hit after the play on St. Francis. Vanisi gets it back with a 15-yard run. Another late hit hurts the Saints and they have to punt on fourth-and-6 at the Pac-Five 37.

Wolfpack start with two short easy throws to Ihu and Pila for a first down. Two incompletions and a 1-yard run for a punt near midfield.

RB Tyson Shimabukuro rips off a 21-yard run into Pac-Five territory. Fourth-and-2 at the 30 and St. Francis brings in Pakele at RB and he gains 3 yards and a first down. Chris Vanisi bounces to the outside and stiffs arms a defender to the ground en route to a 23-yard TD run. 2-point run is no good. 6-0, 7:37, Q2.

FIRST QUARTER

Sophomore Bubba Akana in at QB and his first pass is almost picked off. Saints get their first first down on a 10-yard pass from Akana to Kaniala Williams. Chris Vanisi (6-2, 250) getting his first carries of the season and has three for 27 yards to end the first quarter.

Ihu comes up to field short punt and returns 11 yards to the 26. Outstanding starting field position. Pakele and Supilani Mailei team up on a sack of Johnson for a 6-yard loss. Pakele comes flying in on a blitz and gets another sack. Third-and-31 and Johnson finds Ihu for 32 yards to the 15. Next pass to the end zone is picked off by Micah Kalei. He returns to the 17.

Pac-Five’s defensive holds St. Francis to three runs for 4 yards and a second straight three-and-out.

A 17-yard pass from Johnson to Daven Pila starts the Pac-Five drive. Senior Grey Ihu rips off a 14-yard run on Pac-Five’s first pass play and add on 15 yards for a face-mask penalty. On third-and-10, Johnson lets one fly and Ihu goes up and gets it at the 2 for a 36-yard gain. First-and-goal. LB Destin Pakele with a hit on Johnson on a run to set up third-and-goal from the 3. Timeout Pac-Five. LB Samson Kaleikau breaks up a fourth-down pass and St. Francis takes over on its 3-yard line.


Pac-Five LB Evan Ramirez with a tackle for loss on first down and Pac-Five forces a three-and-out. Jake Smotherman starts at QB for St. Francis.

Pac-Five receives with a fair catch at the 27. St. Francis jumps offsides on the second play and then roughs the passer. Pac-Five lines up to go for it on fourth-and-8 from its 49 but can’t convert. QB Ryan Johnson starts 1-for-5 for 2 yards.
